I always thought the Yasen Class was a prehistoric relic of the Jurrasic period designed back in the 1970s way out of date, is it really that advanced and why does it cost so much, a white elephant I think
Yes...they are the most advanced attack subs the Russians have ever built. They will probably build up to ten of them.

The Yassen class has a submerged displacement at something over 13,000 tons. They will replace both the Akula class SSN and the Oscar class SSGN submarines. They will have 32 VLS cells and ten torpedo tubes, eight 650mm and two 533mm.

They are the quietest submarines Russia has ever produced and probably compare at least with the Advanced Capability LA class, if not even quieter. They supposedly can make upwards of 35 knots underwater.

So, as a very quiet, and fast dual purpose nuclear sub with both SSN and SSGN capabilities, I would call them a very formidable vessel.

I agree a very capable and formidable vessel. Note the adoption of the western practice of using a bow mounted spherical sonar, a first I believe for a Russian submarine. And she has installed angled torpedo tubes, again a practice borrowed from western submarines.

Two others are currently building, and I believe they have cont4acts out for two more beyond that. As I say, there are current plans for ten of them.

Here are some of my favorite pictures of the 1st of class (and only one to date).

MOSCOW — Russia is considering creating a single firearms manufacturer named after the legendary rifle designer Mikhail Kalashnikov by merging two struggling firms, President Vladimir Putin said Nov. 19.

Izhmash, the legendary factory in the central city of Izhevsk where Kalashnikov designed the iconic AK-47 assault rifle, has fallen on hard times since the collapse of the Soviet Union, owing to a fall of orders.

Putin gave his initial support to an idea of Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Rogozin for Izhmash to merge with another Izhveshk arms manufacturer, Izhmekh, under the brand name Kalashnikov.

“As for the merger, this is of course possible,” Putin said in televised remarks. “But the result needs to be an improvement in the situation and in no way a worsening. And always in such cases, there are many social questions. I ask you to pay attention to these.”

Kalashnikov, 93, and 16 colleagues had raised alarm about the situation at Izhmash in an open letter to Putin last month, saying production had fallen to an all-time low and the factory needed to be saved.

Rogozin explained to Putin that the situation at the two Izhevsk firms was difficult since, for many years, they had not received orders from the defense ministry, which is already well supplied with automatic rifles.

“I would like support in creating through the merger a cooperation where we can concentrate industrial potential and can make a modern firearms factory,” he said.

Rogozin, a former ambassador to NATO with an eye for grand populist gestures, has already announced that Kalashnikov has agreed for his name to be used as a corporate brand.

Izhmash, whose history dates to 1807, is still one of the main producers of Russian weapons, including the famed AK-47 (also known as Kalashnikov) and its derivatives.

Izhmekh, meanwhile, has a shorter but equally proud history that dates to its founding in the midst of World War II in 1942.

According to Rogozin’s plan, both companies would be merged under the name Kalashnikov as part of the giant state industrial conglomerate Russian Technologies.

If you don't know Izhmash is the Maker of the AK series as well as a number of other Russian Firearms. they are also the prime developer for the new AK12 weapons system. Izhevsk Mechanical Plant made the The Makarov and Yarygin pistols.
Think Of it like Merging Colt into Smith and Wesson and calling the new Company Stoner arms.

NPO Saturn has started the preparation of a new engine intended for T-50 advanced fighter (PAK FA) for bench testing. It was stated by Evgeny Marchukov, General Designer-Director of A. Lyulka Scientific-and-Technical Center, forming part of NPO Saturn. The testing of the engine will be started in 2014, Lenta.ru reports.

"The first engine will be assembled in two years and the testing will be started in the network of the engine’s full-scale development. This is a brand new engine, that is why its development is taking much time", - Marchukov said. According to him, the specific weight of the new powerplant will be 30% lower as compared to AL-41F1 ("Product 117", the upgraded version of AL-41F1S engine intended for Su-35).

As expected, the life-cycle cost will also be 30% lower as compared to AL-41F1S. According to Marchukov, “the engine should be cheaper”. The new engine for PAK FA (also known as “Product 30”) will be distinct from “Product 117”. The first vehicles will be powered by the “Product 117” engines until the launch of “Product 30”’s production.

There is little information about the new engine of T-50. According to preliminary facts, the engine will have increased thrust and fuel efficiency as compared to AL-41F1. Allegedly, the powerplant will have a thrust of about 107 kN in cruise mode and 176 kN in full afterburner mode.

CEO of NPO Saturn, Ilya Fedorov, said in April 2011 that development of the new engine is running ahead of schedule and the first engines will be delivered to the Russian Ministry of Defense in 2015. The first serial T-50s should be acquired by Russian air forces the same year.

jeff, have those claims been confirmed by anyone else ? i know that the 2009 ONI chart gives it as being the quietest of all russian/chinese submarines, but like the type 095 it is only an estimative, because the sub only started sailing in 2011 and AFAIK its still in sea trials. And what about the sonar/eletronics? IF russia is equal (or even behind) china in electronics, what does that tell about them?

Do you think that the USN has a sub shadowing severodvinsk ?

If it is at sea, I am confident that the US has gotten a read on its acoustic signature.

I believe ONI is basing its "estimates" off of hard data they alredy have at this point...but that is just my opinion.

The US will attempt to tag every new class of new neuclear sub that comes and gather its acoutsic signature out precisely so it will know what it may be up against.

Many times they use our own subs to do this, SSNs, probably the Sea Wolfs are vey ionvolved in this shadowy task...but the US, if they know where a sub will be operating, also has other, even more stealthy means to gather the information without a sub having to be there when the potential sub passes by, or operates there.

Both of those methods are used.

The Indo-Russian project to jointly design a transport aircraft for militaries of both nations kicked off in Moscow [ Images ] on Monday, where 30 engineers from Hindustan Aeronautics Limited began working with their Russian counterparts from the United Aircraft Corporation on the $600-million project.

India [ Images ] and Russia [ Images ] are also collaborating in a $6-billion project to build an advanced fighter called the Fifth Generation Fighter Aircraft.

"Our team in Moscow informed us they are now functional at the special design facility that Russia has set up," confirms NC Agarwal, the Chief Executive Officer of the joint venture company, called Multirole Transport Aircraft Limited, which will design the aircraft.

The MTA will be capable of carrying 15-20 tonnes of payload; or 80 paratroopers; or 60 stretchers and operate from airfields as difficult as Leh, in Ladakh, J&K.

After completing the design and testing of the MTA in 60 months, during which five prototypes will also be built, Russia and India will join hands in building 205 aircraft: 100 for the Russian Air Force (RAF); 45 for the Indian Air Force (IAF); and 60 for export.

For the IAF, the MTA would be a much-needed replacement for the already phased out AN-12 and the ageing AN-32 transport aircraft. The MTA will be a mid-way choice, being smaller than the AN-12, but bigger than the AN-32.

Both those aircraft were propeller-driven turboprops; the MTA will have a turbofan jet engine.

The choice of which engine to use, as also the various systems of the aircraft which would be bought off the shelf, would be decided jointly, based on economy as well as suitability.

New Delhi [ Images ] and Moscow signed an Inter-Governmental Agreement (IGA) in November 2007; after which HAL, UAC and MTA Ltd signed a General Contract, an umbrella document that defines the broad framework of the contract. Then came a $35-million contract for the Preliminary Design Phase (PDP), signed on October 12, 2012, which provided for a joint HAL-UAC team to work for the next 10 months in Moscow.

The team will formalize the MTA's configuration, basic performance, its various systems, the engines, and identify alternatives as well. This will be done to ensure that the RAF's and IAF's requirements are fully met.

While the PDP is being completed by September-October 2103, another contract will be signed for the Detailed Design Phase, in which both sides will take 48 months to complete the design, prototype production and flight-testing of the MTA in accordance with work shares that have been defined in the contract.

"India will carry out some 40 per cent of the design work, while Russia will do the remaining 60 per cent" says Agarwal. "But it will be a collaborative enterprise, since everything has to come together smoothly, without loss of time."

In production, which is expected to begin by end 2017, HAL and UAC will respectively manufacture a specified set of parts and modules for all 205 MTAs. However, the assembly of the IAF aircraft will be done at HAL, Kanpur; and the assembly of MTAs for the RAF from a production agency that Moscow nominates.

The crucial aspect of certification will be a collaborative exercise between the Indian military certification agency, CEMILAC and its Russian counterpart.

According to current plans, the MTA will also meet the certification specifications of the US Federal Aviation Authority, which is called FAR-25 (Federal Airworthiness Requirement -- 25), as well as the European JAR-25 (Joint Airworthiness Requirement -- 25). This will make the MTA more attractive to international buyers.
