MOSCOW, November 15. /TASS/. The Russian government has introduced temporary restrictions of enriched uranium exports to the US, with the relevant decree being signed, the Cabinet’s press service reports.
"This refers to exports of enriched uranium to the US or under foreign trade agreements made with persons registered in the US jurisdiction. Supplies under one-off licenses issued by the Federal Service for Technical and Export Control constitute an exception," the press service informed.
This is a tit-for-tat measure against the restriction of Russian uranium products imports introduced by the US for 2024-2027 and the ban to be imposed by it since 2028 onward. Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered in September 2024 at the meeting with the government to analyze the possibility of limiting strategic raw materials' supplies to international markets.

Russian physicists have developed a quantum cascade laser capable of continuously generating coherent terahertz radiation in a wide range of wavelengths, from 3.1 to 3.9 THz. Its creation will accelerate the development of new wireless communication systems, medical diagnostic devices, and various sensors for space exploration, the MIPT Center for Scientific Communication reported.

"The creation of quantum cascade lasers is an extremely complex technological task. Today, only a small number of technologically advanced countries are capable of solving this task. Almost all stages of creating such lasers require "records" and are only within the power of top teams. This concerns both the development of band designs and the verified growth of semiconductor heterostructures," explained Rustam Khabibullin, head of the MIPT Quantum Cascade Laser Laboratory, whose words are quoted by the University's Scientific Communication Center.

In recent years, physicists have created several quantum cascade lasers capable of producing terahertz beams, but most of them can only produce very short pulses of radiation because they quickly heat up to dangerously high temperatures. Russian scientists have developed a new design for such a laser that solves the overheating problem by reducing the current density by about an order of magnitude.
s scientists note, the researchers managed to do this thanks to the implementation of the idea of one of the founders of quantum electronics, Alexander Prokhorov. Back in 1965, he proposed using two photons and two quantum transitions to generate laser radiation, which in theory allows increasing the efficiency of the laser. Putting this idea into practice turned out to be a very non-trivial task, which Russian physicists only recently managed to solve.


"Here I would like to highlight our colleagues from the Ioffe Institute of Physics and Technology, who managed to grow 160 junction-amplifying modules layer by layer, each of which contains four quantum wells with layer thicknesses from 3 to 7 nanometers. The growth time of such complex structures exceeds 10 hours, and during this time it is necessary to "maintain" the thickness and composition of the semiconductor layers with an accuracy of 1-2%," Khabibullin added.

As subsequent experiments with these structures made of gallium arsenide and aluminum gallium arsenide showed, the lasers created by the scientists were capable of constantly generating terahertz beams of milliwatt power in a wide range of frequencies and temperatures. In the future, this will allow the creation of new types of emitters for medical devices, data transmission systems and various sensors for space probes and landing vehicles, the scientists concluded.

Quantum cascade lasers are a special type of coherent radiation emitters, in which the glow is generated by electron transitions between layers of two different semiconductor materials with specially selected physical and quantum characteristics. The first idea for creating such an emitter was formulated by Soviet physicists back in 1971.

"We at the NCFM, within the framework of the XCELS (Center for Extreme Light Fields Research) project, will create the world's most powerful two-channel laser of 100 PW by 2030. This will allow us to develop critical components and begin creating an exawatt 12-channel laser. Its power will be such that it will allow scientists to practically "boil" a vacuum, which no one in the world has ever managed to do. And we will receive new, unique data on the structure of matter, on how the Universe appeared, and understand the first moments of its existence," he said.

According to him, the project is being created on Russian ideas and technologies that have already been tested in practice. "The country has created real laser systems with a capacity of several PW, allowing the technology to be scaled up and achieve a record result of 100 PW and higher," added Sergeev.
