The National Game of Russia is Chess. It has been part of the curriculum for most Russian schools for over 40 years. And now, starting this Tuesday, Chess is no longer something Russia shares with Europe, but instead with Asia:
Unlike the European Chess Union (ECU) who punished Russian players and suspended the Chess Federation of Russia (CFR)'s membership, the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) has refused to condemn Russia.
The fact that the director of the ENGLISH federation is gushing salty complaints makes this text priceless. Russia was not only the strongest chess playing country in the ECU, but had the largest federation (and perhaps contributed the most revenue). Now the European scene will lose most of its value, while the Asian is set to become the best very soon.
In fact, Europe has now become weaker and less numerous as a continental federation, so they will probably have less World Championship qualifying spots.
Young players growing up will associate the sport of Chess with Asia and make friendships with their Chinese competitors. Russia's entire society is turning its back on Europe and looking to eastward for their future.
