Rising Sea Dragon in Asia (PLAN) 2014 Update

Lieutenant General
Great summary Jeff !

Based on launch dates at shipyards the PLAN in 2014 should be able to commission:

8 x Type 056
3 x Type 054A
2 x Type 052C
1 x Type 052D

Now for 2014 i would like to see the production J-15 on the deck of the Liaoning, the J-10B inducted into the PLAAF and the first Type 052D commissioned into the PLAN.

Well in 2013 we had commissionings of the 13 warships and I agree that we will we most likely 14 this year if we add in the Type 052D

Last year there was

3 x Type 054A 574-575 and 550
8 x Type 056 580-585, 596 and 597
2 x Type 052 150,151

That's 27 warships in 2 years or roughly more than 1 every month if we just think about that it's a huge commissioning rate which by all accounts is going to continue for the foreseeable future

Thank you Jeff, keep up the good work. A comprehensive reviewed of the raise of the PLAN. I wish i could write something about the Irish navy, unfortunately it's nothing much to write about. :(

Well done Jeff.

I have a few mates who have or currently serving in various branches of the military and the subject of the Chinese military crops up from time to time during our occasional get togethers. As in the past I invite them to take a look at the Sino defence forum and singling out your threads as well as Crobatos who unfortunately has been here for a while, worthy of special attention.

Is it only me or that the head and body of the missile are not in a straight line?

I correct my numbers from the previous post in 2014 the PLAN will recieve:

8 x Type 056
4 x Type 054A
2 x Type 052C
1 x Type 052D

That's 15 ships in total and we also have to keep in mind that the PLAN will recieve 24 J-15 naval Flankers this year. But it also means that the production run of the 20 Type 054A, 6 Type 052C and the 18 to 20 Type 056 are over by the end of the year. Unless there are new orders for Type 054A, Type 056 or the newer Type 054B or the Type 055 CG, then that means that in 2015 the Type 052D will be the only ship in production. And if there are no new orders for the Type 056 this year then in 2015 the PLAN will only commission 2 Type 052D's and perhabs 2 Type 056's.

This may not be a coincidence. The PLAN the navy has recieved the biggest share of the procurement budget of the PLA in recent years. That maybe coming to an end and the procurement focus will shift towards the PLAAF the air force. We have seen new platforms coming out recently like the J-10B and the J-16 both with AESA radars. And then there is the Y-9 transporter plane and the associated KJ-500 AWACS. These platforms compared to the previous generation of weapons like the J-10A, J-11B and the KJ-200 are significant steps upwards in terms of technology and capabilities and cost as well. And thats were the PLA perhabs will be focussing on in the coming years.

You cannot shift production capacity from naval shipbuilding to aircraft manufacture. You can stop investing in shipyards, or at any rate reduce it, but not using a shipyard is just plain waste.

First of all that's just my speculation. Secondly i don't believe that they will stop buying new ships in the coming years. Its just that they will scale back to make more money available to buy new planes.

I am pretty sure that there will be 10 Type 056 this year, and that that run will continue. But we will have to wait and see.

I also think that a new frigate will be in the offing.

Type 052D will definitely continue, and the carrier builds will be occurring, though it will be a few years before they complete. I expect submarine construction will continue as well.

Will the PLAN build more logistical or amphibious type vessels? We will have to wait and see, but it is certainly not out of the question. They are certainly in need.

It is without question that aircraft production will continue and probably even increase, but one does not necessarily preclude the other.
