I thought so perhaps as well, but this comparison, scaled appropriately (note barrel thickness and muzzle device and overall proportions), made by a colleague, makes me think possibly otherwise.

Chinese equivalent of SOPMOD's long handguard over standard barrel?

Or this is the production model with shorter barrel than the prototype version. Probably mimicking M27's 16.5 inch barrel.

The QBZ-191 should have two "standard" versions for infantry, the carbine and the rifle variants with different barrel lengths.
So far we've only mostly seen the carbine variant in use, with next to no pictures of the rifle variant.

I don't know if this new pic shows a barrel length of the DMR variant (as you say, did they shorten it?)...

Or is it the assault rifle variant but with an mlok handguard, e.g. a SOF specific variant?

Both seem plausible as we've had few pics of either the DMR or the assault rifle variant which are clear and definitive.

Not to mention, the older picture has the rifle facing much more forward of his body yet the barrel seems longer.

It seems the front picatinny rail sections are milled into the handguard like in geissele model below.

The front flip up sight also milled into the handguard.

This photo might be genuine because the barrel proportion is similar. The barrel clearly longer than 14.5 inch but also shorter than the barrel of DMR prototype.

If you notice, the DMR and supposed LSW (the LSW having even fewer photos) share the same hand guard. This handguard is more ventilate which would make sense for a higher rate or sustained fire. Possible that the DMR and the LSW do share the same handguard, with the LSW having a shorter and heavier barrel and a say 3x-6x optic as in the photo here:

And the DMR has a 6x-12x scope with the same handguard but a longer barrel as in this photo:

Just a thought, as both the LSW and DMR are support weapons that share similar roles performed slightly differently.

I'm not sure if there even is a LSW variant of the QBZ-191, because we know the PLA has a 5.8mm new design LMG with a low profile design which they are pursuing as a LSW.

The fact that all QBZ-191s should be fully automatic anyway means the role of a M27 IAR esque LSW seems less intuitive to me in the PLAs projected availabi

The Geissle m lok handguard is definitely one of the better ones out there, adopting a similar configuration is very much respectable imo.

most likely an 18-inch barrel similar to those of QBZ-03 and QBZ-95, so the muzzle velocity could still be above 3000fps (DBP10/87). However, the new DBP19 ammo could even be faster and more lethal.

Was the name of the new rifle officially confirmed already to be QBZ-191? Maybe anyone can help me by showing the direct or indirect confirmation from official channels?
