I think the main cost compromise would be being able to use standard AK mags rather than training. Again Type 81 already had Bolt hold open standard and China was pretty poor back then. Also note that Type 81’s hold open does not have any external release unlike AR15. There’s no reason to believe that they would get rid of a feature they already implemented in a far older design.

That's a good point, magazine compatibility may indeed be a more pressing priority.

The stock of the the QBZ191 is so bad it requires a modification in the AR Tube. 1000047332.jpg

Thank god it has a left side magazine release, and at last someone had the awareness to take a clear picture of its left side.

With ambidextrous magazine release, a left sided bolt release, right sided charging handle that can be released after bolt hold open, and ambidextrous fire select, at least it has the most basic of the "modern expected features" of an assault rifle.

While China were poor they still had smart people that can quickly understand how things work. I'm not saying that bolt hold open is because of that but poor isn't an indication.

North Korea is poorer than Somalia but that don't mean that Somalia can train nuclear scientist like North Korea. China had nukes before bolt hold open.

Early bolt hold open was an issue of cost vs benefit.

A non existent bolt hold open result in a slight slower reloading procedure.
A malfunctioning one, for example one that refuse to let go and release the bolt will render a gun completely inoperable.

Given this context, a mass produced self loading rifle was in its early state of development after WW2. New features like select fire were already considered somewhat risky. Why add another variable that could cause problems when the gun can just function without it?
