Probably from the big steel penetrators hitting steel targets.

I know there was a case with a combat video I watched involving Syrian rebel militants assaulting an Assad regime outpost. The rebels AKs and PKMs that they were using were creating huge puffs of black smoke and flashes with each discharge of their weapons. It looked particularly noticeable with the purple sky backdrop in contrast. And the reason given for this particular situation was the guns shooting old soviet era ammunition.

The Soviets had armor piercing incendiary ammunition from WW2 which was made for airplane use. The incendiaries were supposed to set airplane fuel tanks on fire. Sometimes this ammo was widely distributed to their allies because it was close to being expired. There is ammo of this type for several Soviet caliber small arms.

Chinese infantry gear is nothing to be either proud or interested in, and showing too much deference and exposure towards it, despite how it is portrayed, always ends up with the inevitable conclusions that 1: they are still very much behind either in quality or in proliferation or both, and 2: that there are much more substantial domains of PLA advancement.

I used to occasionally post pictures on reddit as well, even for those more important domains, but it's not a tide worth fighting.

At the very least be more selective and tasteful in the pictures that one chooses to post there (and not specific to him, but others that may be reading as well)
It can't be helped, until PLA fight some of US' vassal state(s) for real and embedded US "instructors" find out for themselves how their gear stand up against 5.8mm projectile and the QBZ-191 that fire them.

Like, Americans fascinates with AK-47 not just because it's "bad guy's guns" but because US troops came face-to-face with those who actually knows how to use them to good effects...

New labels on the magazine well. The image quality is too poor to tell for sure, but I believe these could be labels that list the rifles' serial numbers and to whom they are assigned. Previously, similar labels were printed on conspicuously white or red paper and taped on. This new low-visibility look is much better.
