now I'm just confused, is the standard squad gonna have belt feds or rpk/iar type of lmgs?

We don't know yet, but I suspect the TOE of a squad will differ depending on what sort of unit they are in.

Some units may benefit from having a proper belt fed LMG, while others may get by with the magazine/drum fed DMR operating as an IAR.

Speaking of drum mags, I'm surprised the PLA didn't invest in developing a box mag like something similar to what surefire is doing.

They did develop a high-capacity magazine in the early 1990s (see image below). It holds 56 5.8mm rifle rounds, which were stacked/staggered in four rows. Although it had proven reliable, the magazine never entered production.

Anyway, the PLA/PAP did adopt a similar high-capacity magazine design for the QCW05 submachine gun, but it fires the 5.8mm pistol cartridge.

aren't those things kinda notorious for having feeding issues?
So do Drums. That’s the reason they are rarely used in assault rifles. It’s the reason Germany didn’t adopt the MG36, that M27 doesn’t have a drum. That RPK74 rarely uses them. The the cause is the same trying to get the spring and feed to reliably cycle as needed from a magazine that isn’t in a conventional box format.
I thought that only applied to early models. I've heard that more recent models fixed the reliability issues.
The technical problem remains how do you get a quad stack of ammo to narrow to a duel stack? In drums is how do you reliably maintain the feed from ammunition that is spooled and then is forced up the magazine well? That’s why coffin and drums are fairly rare in military service.
You have cases like the Ultimax 100 that get around this by a custom designed drum and magazine well or the like they might get through trials but normally with wavers for issues.
