If you look at an AR bolt face, you will notice the extractor is about 1 lug and 2 recess wide, around 1/8 - 3/16 of the circumference. 4 lug with only the extractor in the recess means about 1/8th of the circle, but with no stress on the extractor because its not the lug. This is likely the reason for halving the lugs of the AR.I would love to hear the reasoning behind the 4 bigger lugs
