Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

Psst, mate, this is the PLAN sub thread, i think type 022s don't belong in this thread. I know its none of my business, but the irony is too delicious to resist. ;)
Thanks...my bad. It was early in the morning here and somehow I thought I was on the FAC thread. So...I changed the question to:

"How many Yuans are in service now."

Carry on...nothing to see here.

I believe there should be at least three to four now, maybe even five. Maybe more. But its hard to identify subs on the surface without identifying markings, since each Yuan, except for the first one, looks like a clone of each other.

New-type submarine patrols in deep sea
(Source: PLA Daily) 2009-10-23

The new-type home-made submarine

No.330 submarine of a submarine flotilla of the East China Sea Fleet (ECSF) of the PLA Navy frequented the vast territorial seas in recent years. It has successfully accomplished dozens of major tasks such as equipment acceptance, test and long voyage and is dubbed as a “pioneer” of the new-type submarine of the PLA Navy.

No.330 submarine is a new generation submarine independently developed and produced by China. And it has such advantages as low noise, long underwater sailing time and advanced power as well as weapon and equipment system.

The reporters experienced a maritime exercise in a sea area not long ago. New-type submarine combat group with No.330 submarine as the leader concealed, broke through the blockade of the destroyer formation and anti-submarine military strength in the air and entered the attack position by adopting new combat method. “Direction and speed of the target are ascertained, a type of torpedo in 3# pipe gets ready to release!” As soon as the order of the captain was released, the torpedo left the pipe. Several minutes later, the torpedo hit the target accurately. This exercise symbolized that a new generation submarine of the PLA Navy has generated battle effectiveness.
well, this is talking about 330, the first Yuan submarine in service. I guess the part about long underwater sailing time is used by online folks to show that Yuan is using AIP. It says that this submarine class has finally achieved battle effectiveness, I think that means it has achieved either IOC or FOC.

well since there are four Yuan's built now, are all of them gonna go to East Sea fleet? with the first one achieving battle effectiveness, ESF certainly is the one with adequate knowledge and experience operating this stuff.

It appears based on open source photography, that Yuan 330, which is the first one, was based with the South Sea Fleet. However, the other three new ones are all at ESF. Maybe 330 may one day be reassigned to join them, I don't know. Or its possible a fourth of the new Yuan version maybe produced to fill the rank of the ESF Yuan flotilla to complete it, a flotilla being four ships.

Re: PLAN submarines Thread II

It seems PLAN satisfied with the test of Yuan, it seems to start mass production of Yuan glass, I mean Yuan production will be faster.
Some articles have said that the South China Sea water is not suitable for submarine activities, just as China's nuclear submarine base in the South China Sea they are just hiding, and then moved to Qingdao, Huludao. The first one, "Yuan" class early was hiding, but now the formation of combat, of course, to the East China Sea, in the face of their enemies.

I would say the South China sea water is actually perfect. Warm water reduces sonar range, and underwater currents, which are plenty in tropical regions, tend to distort and block sound. Furthermore, there is enormous sea traffic and healthy biological ecosystems which means a lot of ambient sound. All these point to conditions where sound doesn't travel as far as it does on cold water, reducing range for detection and identification.

Yes I recall there were three in that base, most likely the new Yuans (039B), while the original Yuan 330 (039A) is still at South China sea base.

That cuts both ways, limiting the effectiveness of the sensors on the submarine to the same degree they degrade those on the surface ships and helicopters.
