It can be that the DDG have detected the sub and as USN said it is very dangerous for a sub to get close to the sonar array, the DDG attempted to harass/force the sub to surface by hitting it with its sonar array. The sub could be killed this way with no damage on the US DDG apart from a broken sonar array and they can say "we did not mean to damage/kill it, just an accident". The DDG is far more agile than the sub underwater.

However, the Navy does not believe this was a deliberate incident of Chinese harassment, as it would have been extremely dangerous had the array gotten caught in the submarine's propellers.

This part of the story suggests there was no aggressive action so there apparently was no attempt to harass/force the sub to the surface. Sounds most likely the sub may have been trailing a distance away when the towed array happened to hit it.

Yes, according to US Navy it seems the sub have no idea there is a sonar array and collided accidently. But if the US DDG did some aggressive action, and the sub underwater had no idea what the DDG have done, they can report it as "an accident".

BTW it sounds like the sub was detected by sonar, unless the sub was damaged heavily and was forced to surface.

How could the sub have missed the sonar array? If it was turned out, they would have at least figured out that something is in the water.

The towed sonar array is actually the AN/SQR-19 array; it's a passive set that's towed a mile behind the ship. It's a very popular passive set, used in a lot of USN warships and in Canadian warships, albeit with a different signal processor. The Chinese probably didn't realize that McCain was trailing their passive set and got tangled up in the set.

Firstly, it was a passive sonar, submarine can not detect it, so it can't be the submarine intended hit the sonar.

Secondly, nobody use sonar to hit submarine when they discovered it.

Conclusion, US DDG did not aware that there was a submarine around, the sonar was not working.

Well, considering the Americans are saying its a Chinese sub, and since we heard nothing about the sub surfacing, that suggest that not only were they aware of it, but that they were also able to ID it from the signature.

Or by deduction, It wasn't any of Americas allies, because they would have been told, that leaves the Russians and the Chinese. Guess who would be at the top of the list, if the Russians didn't secretly tell the Americans , that it wasn't them.

You need some serious catch up to do on your understanding of IR. First of all the US official that leaked the story to CNN refused to say whether the US ship knew that there was a sub. If he said they didits gonna tick off the state department, if he said they didn’t, it might tick off the pentagon. So politics as always play a role that ppl seem to consistently ignore.
Also you should notice that Beijing and Washington obviously communicated with each other, because both sides have remained silence about this incident. It doesn’t have to be the US knowing that it was a Chinese sub, it could be the Chinese knowing it was an American ship. It works both ways you know.
