Re: PLAN submarines Thread II
Well the Ohio & Triomphant class SSBN hadly have a hump. Even in the Borei class the hump is almost non-existent viewing from the sides and overall much less than the Delta class.
So maybe there is reason other than just aesthetics.
Usually the hump on the SSBNs has been there directly for the housing of the large SLBMs. If you want the advantages in terms of water flow over the hull, quietness, etc. of not having a hump, either you make the hull larger (ie. like the Typhoons for the Russians) or the missiles smaller.
In the US case, even the Trident missiles are small enough to fiut into the Ohio class hull, which is much smaller than the Typhoon.
Some examples of the hull diameter for SSBNs with little or no "hump":
Russian Typhoon Class SSBN: 75 ft. 6 inches
Russian Borei Class SSBN: 44 ft.
US Navy Ohio Class SSBN: 42 ft.
Royal Navy Vanguard Class SSBN: 42 ft.
French Triomphant Class SSBN: 41 ft.
Not surprising for the Ohio and Vanguard as they carry exactly the same missile.
