CCTV Special: Inside a Sub, of course, did not show you too much!

But the video told you that the sub is quiet. How quiet?

Standing a one yuan coin up on a table, then igniting the sub main enigine, according to the video, the coin will not fall.

I think he said standing the coin on the equipment (engine) rather than a table.

In addition, a sailor mentioned that there are special regulations regarding even little things like how to close cabinet doors and wash their hands. Which is both encouraging that they are paying attention to such details, and also gives an indication of the quietness of the sub that such small things matter.

.......................

Another item mentioned is the simultaneous firing of 2 torpedoes to hit 2 targets. This sounds significant ......

When you consider this quote frpom the article:

"Standing a one yuan coin up on a table, then igniting the sub main enigine, according to the video, the coin will not fall."

It is clear to me that they are talking about a Diesel/Electric sub.

ok, thanks, makes sense. If only they cud make the nuclear subs like this. I was pleasantly surprised by how roomy it was inside. looked quite comfy actually.

It would be interesting to know whether the main engine in question is diesel or electric. If diesel, then that's good, probably huge progress from old Romeo boats. This sub could probably snorkle pretty quietly. If electric, then that's no big deal. Electric motors are naturally silent and very smooth, having no reciprocating mass at all.

No problem, glad to help.

I would presume they are talking about the diesel engines as the "main" engines, but am not 100% sure of that.

Normally, in DE subs, the electric motors are used when the sub has to be the quietest under water when it cannot operate the diesles because of sound constraints, or because they are too deep to get air. They (the electric motors) are used as sparingly as possible. The diesel engines charge them while operating, and unless they have AIP (which make a huge difference for modern DE subs), must be snorkeling or on the surface to get the air to do so.

Anyhow, it would be my guess if they are talking about a coin remaining standing on edge while they start them, that is would be the diesels they are talking about.
