Forgive me, but I simply cannot see the justification for needing to design a brand new specialist class of nuclear subs to carry ASBM when you already have perfectly suited ballistic missile launching nuclear subs in the form of SSBNs, simply swop the nuclear armed ICBMs with ASBMs and you are good to go.

Although I do like the idea of a easily switchable modular design which would allow SSBNs to be quickly refitted as SSGNs or vice versa.

But this new universal module design could just be incorporated into the next generation SSBN design without having to make a different class of nuclear subs for it.

I agree. Strangely I find my self and wolf on the same page a lot lately.
The USN is already working along those lines for the SSBN-X the british as well for there up coming boomers. The advantages extend beyond just retasking but would also include upgrades of missile systems and special mission roles like swimmer lockouts., cargo holds, uav launch equipment And if the PRC ever joined START (a move that would earn then a lot of brownie points here in the west. ) such a ability would allow compliance without need of retiring a still useful hull.

24 March

CHINA (RUSSIA)
According to state media, China will procure four LADA class submarines from Russia … two to be built in Russia, the other two with technology transfer in China … agreement signed just before president Xi’s visit to Russia … no further details (price, timetable) given thus far.
BBC World Service news mentioned a few minutes ago the same and the buy of two dozen ( ? ) fighter aircraft.
If this were to lead to increased cooperation between China and Russia in the Far East and in Central Asia it might well be money well spent.

Has this really been signed? It was announced as signed already last December.

I think this is going to happen. Anytime you have a deal as large as this, it will take time to actually get finalized.

imo, it shows that China feels it still has a lot to learn from Russia in the realm of quieting technology.

hmmm i dont know, Lada Class is pretty old technology in terms of SSK, new generation French and German SSKs are really the cutting edge of modern diesel electric submarines, Lada Class is way out of date in my opinion, infact probably about 15-20 year out of date

Pakistan Navy has imported 2 MESMA AIP systems to upgrade on two of the Agosta 90-B submarines (S137 and S138) while the 3rd one is running on AIP (S139)

if Pakistan is seeking new SSK they must be better than Agosta-90B with AIP, secondly it must be suffcient for Pakistan to cancel the U-214 deal with Germany right at the time when the contract was about to be signed, so whatever China offered must have been either very cheap or either very good, or a combination of both, i think its a combination of both

so then going back to Lada Class, why would China buy some from Russia if thier SSK technology is already suffcient for a export order? hard one to call but i would say they are most likely of no use to China, might be politics to play here, but we are yet to see some solid proof of this deal too

Well considering that the first Lada still hasn't joined service yet, I think you might be underrating Lada here.

remember, aip stuff has nothing to do with this. China is not looking to import Lada for its combat system or aip system or sonar or the electronics. If it does buy Lada, it will be strictly to learn from the Russians on noise insulation technology and such. That's just my opinion.

According to this article the Russians said there's no deal for both planes and subs.
