It depends what version of 209 you are comparing .... surely current operational Mings would have much superior electronic and weapons system than type 209 Argentina operated during Malvinas/Falkland war.

While what you said may be true, keep in mind also that whoever that may be hunting the Mings today or tomorrow are/will be a generation or even two more capable than the ships and ASW assets used by the Royal Navy hunting the 209 in 1982. ;)

True. But in general isn't the Ming a bit more noiser?

I thought the idea is that even if the Ming was discovered, it is no big deal as they are a couple generations behind latest subs and also it doesn't really give away much.

It's possible this Ming was undetected, and it's also possible it was detected and tracked all the way. We will never know for sure.

Hence the need for Ming to do those "risky" patrols and collect intelligence during peace time. The Ming might be tracked, but the acoustic signature given up by the Ming is less valuable than intelligence might be collected by the Ming and operating experience interacting with actual ASW assets of Japan and US.

The MING is an old platform, but she is more manueverable (two screws), narrower, and has a shallower draft than most, so it can operate in waters where the newer and larger subs cannot go. She also makes an excellent minelayer.
