Indeed this is every exciting! I hope there is no change to those Sunburn missiles. Or do they plan to install some newer supersonic missile like YJ-12?

In this way, there would be enhanced air-defense capability plus deadly punches...

Which do you think is easier to be integrated with PLAN's C4ISR? Sunburn or YJ-12? I think this answers your question.

If all these are changed and replaced, what is left is an empty shell. Then why not keep it as it is for a few more years and wait for 055, or use two 052C/D in place of one Sov?

The Sovs cost a lot of money to run, and takes up a lot of crew. It makes no sense to leave them as is while they get more and more obsolete while tying up all those resources and personnel for decades to come.

If they also change the engines, then I would expect a great deal of internal changes to improve automation and reduce the crew size. Depending on how comprehensive they want to make the upgrade, they could probably also upgrade the crew quarters and onboard facilities to bring those in line with modern PLAN standards.

All of those changes would be useful to help make the type more 'deployable', especially on long range long duration missions.

I also have a feeling that the YJ12 might be too big for even the strike length new CCL VLS. In which case, upgrading the Sovs would be the cheapest, quickest and most effective way to get those new beasties deployed on surface ships without having to design a new class of ship specifically around the beastly missile.

I would be surprised if they changed the engine type (such as changing from current steam turbine to gas turbine), but they definitely could have carried out measures to improve the powerplant.

@taxiya, improving the engines, combined with other upgrades including weapons, sensors, combat management crew accommodation, would still make the Sovs a very relevant ship for the foreseeable few decades. And the Sovs were never going to be retired early, given this is the Chinese Navy after all, and it would be a waste to throw away a perfectly good hull.

My guess is that it is a combination off their ASW capabilities and their experience with the hull forms and their upkeep/sea handling/overall characteristics/etc.

They had to choose after the fall. They couldn't do many of both.

The Sovremennyy docked in the photo (#720) is supposed to be modernized and returned to service by 2020. Since it's 2016 already and the ships look neglected, can we assume that they won't be returned to service in 4 years?

We don't know when those photos were taken.

Also, 4 years is plenty of time to refurbish them and put them back into service. You can build brand new destroyers in less time.
