So, really the article was probably showing us 2 things the removal of the Anti-ship missiles from a 'Sov'.............and the rear structure from a Trimaren.......correct?

No question those Sovs are under going deep refit not just upgrade
In addition lets not forget that 167, 168 and 169 are also going through a similar heavy refit
Next in line are 115,116 and 112 and 113
This will add 11 very modern warships to PLAN
Add to that 6 x Type 052C
That's 18 units
Then you have the streamlined Type 052D production to 12 or more
That's 30 x DDG
Now those 11 could make a massive difference and that is a sign of a good naval plan to upgrade existing units and keeping them on par with modern DDG
In a time of crisis they could make all the difference and China is not being irresponsible with its resources

I've yet to see a Coast Guard vessel with provisions for Sunburn-type missiles.
Yeah but wasn't the missiles removed?

Yes; I was joking. It would be quite surreal to see a destroyer of such massive scale being delegated to a Coast Guard role.

112 and 113 have already done their mid-life upgrade refit, so only minor refits can be expected.
Only 167,136 and 137 are for MLU at this moment.
168 and 169 are due in around 4 or 5 years time, so are 138 and 139.
More interesting is what type of MLU would 170 and 171 get when their time come, will they get what 052D is having?

Off loading all the weapons could be the reason, if the engines are off-loaded as well, that's no small surgery, as they'd have to cut open a few decks to get there.

Yes, it looks like the 'Sovs', will take a lot of hard work to update, obviously being initially a Russian design, makes things harder. We may have to wait quite a while to see the end result of the updates.
What i wait to see is what new weapon suites will be added to these ships.
