Philippines is trying to drag EU into the SCS fray, but other than maybe the UK, I can't see any EU nations crossing China in a major way.

President Benigno Aquino will seek European support for Philippine efforts to resolve maritime territorial disputes with China during a week-long visit to EU nations including France and Germany, a foreign ministry official said Monday.

Aquino will also raise his proposal to stop China from further escalating tensions in the strategically-vital South China Sea, assistant foreign secretary Zeneida Collinson said.

"In all the meetings starting with Spain, we will seek their continued support on the Philippine position in the West Philippine Sea," she told reporters, using the local term for the South China Sea.

"It's important for our president to have the opportunity to apprise these world leaders directly on what is happening in... the South China Sea," when he visits Spain, Belgium, France and Germany from September 13 to 20, she said.

Such support can be "tacit" and did not need to be contained in a formal document, she added.

China claims almost all of the South China Sea, a vital shipping lane and fishing ground that is believed to hold vast mineral resources.

This conflicts with the territorial claims of the Philippines as well as Brunei, Malaysia, Taiwan and Vietnam.

In recent years, tensions between the Philippines and China have risen as Beijing has aggressively pressed its claim, citing "historical facts" and occupying and fortifying outcrops and islets.

Last month, the Philippines protested at China's increasing patrols in the Reed Bank, the site of a confrontation between vessels from the two countries in 2012.

While the poorly-equipped Philippine military cannot match China, Aquino has resorted to diplomatic and legal means including an arbitration case before a UN tribunal. However China has refused to participate in the proceedings.

Collinson said the Europeans have previously supported the Philippines in seeking a "peaceful resolution of conflict".

During his meetings with European leaders, Aquino will also bring up his "triple action plan" calling on China and other claimants to halt all provocative actions, she added.

While in France, Aquino will meet with French President Francois Hollande and Prime Minister Manuel Valls and discuss improving defence relations, Collinson said.

thanks for the 2 links. that's a very beautiful ship. well designed too because it can deliver cargo/or vehicles and up to 400 passengers for 30 day duration. they could drop off cargo/supplies around the SCS and also take visitors on an interesting little SCS trip. there's no shortage of passengers, this thing can pick up passengers all around Guangdong/HK/macau.

More tripe from the BBC on South China Sea disputes. I wouldn't bore readers with a complete overview, suffice to say it's yet another hit piece from the Western press. Oh, it has most of the facts in good order (for a change), and it invariably calls China out for not following international laws (UNLOS), but like most Western lame stream press, the commentator left out the most critical piece of information, and that is under UNCLOS, China has the right to opt out of arbitration!

The Western garbage news just drone on and on, hoping for... what? What is it they want? I'll tell you what; regime change, and NOW! Not tomorrow, not next week, not next month. Now! Don't pass Go, don't collect 200 RMBs, jut democratize! F-the consequences of getting it wrong, and never mind what kind of deadly chaos it might cause if China implodes. Hey! There are Western Dali Lama cult worshipers to please, all 10 of them in Hollywood. And if 50 million Chinese, Tibetan, and Uyghurs die from civil war, well that's just the price of doing business. After all, the Tree of Liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of innocents, right?

*Deleted* because it's unrelated to this topic. I'll move my question to a different thread.

The BBC journalist broke off a part of the wreck of Sierra Madre. That wreck is hardly livable and will soon be inhabitable. :)

Actually, another important omission that I find these media streams miss and lack in comprehension is that the UN recognizes the One China principle. The US does too. So does the Philippines. Now, excluding the issue of peaceful reunification which is a different thread, the reporter's mention that Taiwan's possession of Taiping is strange merits a face palm. The fact that Taiwan demonstrates effective control and administration of Taiping means they have an EEZ entitlement in the area. Without any resolution on EEZ boundary overlaps, the islands being built by China can all fall within Taiping's EEZ. And vis-a-vis the One China principle, that means what they are doing isn't necessarily illegal within the framework of UNCLOS.

If the BBC wants to be avant garde on reporting this topic, they should send a reporter to spend time with all the claimants and let each side present their viewpoints. Vietnam and Philippines sending civilians to their outposts is just as expansive, deliberate, and unilaterally changing status quo.

Very nice set of pictures.

I presume they are all of Woody Island?

Progress in reclamation is impressive, the island near the end of the

runway used to be connected by a narrow causeway.

Now they filled up the area between the causeway and the runway.

Also notable is the pictures with the blue containers.

The open one clearly has large diameter Reverse Osmosis filters installed inside.
