PLAN SCS Bases/Islands/Vessels (Not a Strategy Page)

not sure .... it depends on how big the desalination plant is. I would be surprised if Woody Island would need more than 20MVA.

I still believe "Micro nuclear reactor" is the way to go for China to develop and build .... I am sure China has the capability to do that

something like Hyperion or Toshiba 4S

I think the cost of a nuclear facility and lack of natural protection for the facility makes it not as enticing. Not sure what the wind potential is in those areas but a wind farm right off those waters would probably be the most self sustaining and capable of generating 20 MW.

Nuke facility in the middle of South China Sea is protection itself, No one wants to attack it and make it leak. :)

Itself is a game changer. Building a Nuke facility there.

Only for countries living nearby. Remember USAF bombing the bridges at Novi Sad and damaging the economies of all countries using the Danube for transport, from Germany to Ukraine.

Dr. Strangelove, I understand your doomsday machine logic. But it's a bad idea. Notwithstanding the provocative and controversial nature of building a nuclear facility in a currently disputed area, It would be extremely hard and costly to support a nuclear site on a small barren island in the middle of ocean, not to mention protect it from terrorists and non-state actors trying to obtain nuclear materials from a vulnerable location.

Add in the possibilities of issues like Typhoons, rouge waves... this has nuclear disaster emblazoned in hot pink Neon lettering.

A game changer for better or for worse? Someone may attack it simply to make it leak and uninhabitable, thereby neutralizing the island to be a base for Chinese operations. Think of it as scorch earth tactics. That would be a major set back. Again, the island has zero natural protection for a nuclear facility.

I read Diego Garcia experimented with OTEC power generation, maybe another possibility.

Big Wang, it would appear from your posts (and probably your screen name as well IMHO) that you are very young.

Please take more time to absorb knowledge here on SD from older, and much more experienced posters, who have a lot of years experience in naval and other military systems.

SD prides itself on being a place where mature, professional discussion on military matters are held from all across the world occurs, and where people can come and learn from those discussions...and then make similar input of their own.

We welcome new members, and we welcome those who come here to learn. But please, as was asked of you on the Type 052C/D Thread, you must stop posting nonsensical ideas like this.

Ask serious questions about issues you see here. That is fine in learning. But these ideas you are posting about installing nuclear plants to power small island outposts, or building 100 Type 52D destroyers as a jobs program in China and a way of scaring opposition...and then immediately placing 60 of them in reserve are not serious suggestions at all from anyone with any maturity in these matters.

It is not my intent to offend you...to the contrary, to help you ensure that your membership here is beneficial and lasting.

OT
OTEC uses the difference in temperature between the surface waters and the about 2 degrees Celsius of the deep ocean. The South China Sea is not deep enough to provide the cool water.

Taiwan is also upgrading its island in the Spratlys with facilities to support Navy and air force assets - though of course it does not receive the kind of criticism China does, while laying claim to the same area that China does.
