China is building another super base at Sanya on Hainan island. In these February 2013 pictures found on Google Earth, you can see a large pier almost complete which is 150 meters in width. That's much wider than the 40m width of the piers in the other Sanya naval base which hosts 052Cs and submarines. Building such a large pier suggests that the new super base will be the home of the next Chinese aircraft carrier.

These pictures also show the wave barrier around the edges of the harbor. So far there are more berths under construction inside the base with the beginnings of another pier, possibly. Sanya is becoming the Honolulu of China.

I told you that a couple of months ago, if you remember.

The Jinmujiao base is essentially identical to the the Xiaokouzi base, of which A. Man just posted a nice picture. So that is obviously where the SSF carriers will be based.

Or maybe just the Liaoning and a new LHD?

Those pictures are from two different forts. The first three/four are from the outpost at Fiery Cross Reef and the last six are from the outpost at Subi Reef.

Thanks for posting those pictures! Photos of China's South China Sea outposts are rare.

Hmmm.... not very impressive.

One would think they would at least give those guns better fire-control.

An early-warning radar, fire-control radar and some electro-optics would do them some good.

Manual control over open sights is pathetic.

You give something the sort of firepower and sensor systems it needs according to its role. Nobody puts a fully stabilised EO-tracking 20mm anti-air cannon on a SPG. You may want to ask yourself why.

Giving ZOMG TEH BEST to anything you build is a recipe for budget apocalypse.

How did you use the measuring tool? Is it on google map or is this a programme, a good way to measure distances I guess, can I do this from a iPad

Looks like a bad idea for a pier it's right next to a little island

asif igbal, I used Google Earth. I agree that it's strange to build the large pier so close to an island. Even if the island doesn't prevent ships from docking on the north side of the pier, it makes getting in and out a bit more difficult.

Having a fort at those respective locations is mainly for showing the flag. Intelligence gathering would be a second as one of those locations has a tower with radar dome. But in terms of defensive positions, they are horrible. There's no high ground or bunker so spending the money on fire-control radar and/or electro-optics would be a waste not to mention two factors that makes maintaining such systems a nightmare - the constant salt water environment right at the doorstep and electricity which is a precious commodity on these isolated forts. The manual control over open sights would actually hold an advantage there and at the end of the day, sufficient to ward off small threats. Anything more substantial, a call out to the nearest naval patrol would be more effective.
