China is planning to construct new civil facilities such as lighthouses and radio navigation stations in the Nansha Islands. Facilities used for environmental observation, disaster prevention and alleviation, transportation and logistical support are also on the cards, the National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC), China's top economic planner, told Xinhua on Wednesday.

These facilities are meant to ensure local civil needs, provide the international community with public services like assistance and salvage at sea, and promote international cooperation on maritime scientific research, the NDRC said.

On May 26th, the Ministry of Transport hosted a ground-breaking ceremony for the construction of two lighthouses on Huayang Reef and Chigua Reef of the Nansha Islands.

The Nansha Islands are situated in the southern part of the South China Sea, which is an important international maritime transport route as well as a major fishing ground. A large number of fishing vessels operate in this area all year round, which has led to many maritime traffic accidents.

Well the Nansha Islands are in fact the Spratly Islands.

It is clear that China is building much more than just lighthouses and radio communications on these islands.

Jettys, Piers, Radar stations, airfields, etc., etc. are being built in addition to lighthouses and radio comms.

That is the old site pre-reclamation.

Those photos are from late December, 2011.

Even if the pics were new, as you say, it is all with the old existing base on Fiery as the backdrop. It's a little surprising to see how so many on the net think it's new and part of the recent reclamation with some folks even in disbelief and wondering how all that could have been set up so quickly.

Think I already posted links to this site before but quite comprehensive photos (click on new tab to enlarge) and info regarding SCS projects (of China's side, at least). Worth a browse-around.

Thanks for the high resolution photos, confusion!

Are new helipads being built at Hughes, Cuarteron, Johnson South, and Gaven reefs, or are they going to rely solely on the helipads attached to the old forts?

I'm surprised to see a new strand of land emanating from the base at Hughes Reef because it started so late in the project. What do people think it will be?
