PLAN Marines II

China's PLAN Marines participate in an actual-troop confrontation training at a training base in north China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, March 13, 2014. This is the first time for the marine corps to carry out such training with a brigade under the Beijing Military Area Command in cold areas. (Xinhua/Zha Chunming)

Looks like Blue Team Red Team exercises. ANd when hit, your top button (hehehe top knot) blows your color smoke.

The one guy took a "hit" causing ther smoke to come out, and he's out of action. Probably a laser or other electronic "tag" used in the exercise..

The one guy looks like he has blue paint on his uniform so maybe it is paint ball stuff.

I think that's his blue uniform underneath showing. Perhaps it's laser tag, not paint ball, and as you've suggested, the smoke from top of helmet indicates you are gone.

Yeah, I think it is the blue uniform too. I don't think paint ball hits can set off smoke on his helmet.

I also like Popeye's note on the bottom "don't ask me. I don't know...". The guy's posture suggests that he's definitely pissed :p

You are correct. He has some form of camo pattern on top of the blue uniform. I did not see that earlier today.

Probably some type of electronic "hit" caused the smoke to come out and mark him as either KIA or WIA in the exercise.

Yeah it is pretty obvious this is just a MILES for infantry... Check the helmets.

The PLA obviously have more comprehensive MILES for AFVs and the like, but this looks like an infantry urban combat exercise.

Edit: looks like red (good guy) vs blue (bad guy) confrontation exercise with both sides using MILES of course. Note the colour of the smoke expeller on their helmets.

Its army vs marines, both in their standard camos.

The lasers are the little boxes clipped on the side of the scope mounts. You can even see the laser warning labels in some of those pictures.

The helmets also have sensors built in to detect 'hits'.

What confuses me is the presence of soldiers who don't seem to have either laser tags or sensors on their helmets. What's the point of them if they can't score or be 'killed'?

Other than that, I'm liking these pictures a lot, you can see the focus and concerntration clearly on the faces and in the body language of all the troopers in the pictures. Gives them some very good experience that is as close to the real thing as its feasible to get, and some very valuable training.

PS, anyone else notice the rifle grenade that marine has loaded in the picture with the sulky sniper? Wonder how that will work...maybe a smoke round?

Probably a Smoke, as to the receiver less troops note the first of these lack laser kits on there weapons ( IT's not Miles it's Miles Like) others may not actually be participating as active troops one of the troops who's helmet lacks a smoke plug can be seen talking on a radio, Now in US opfor training there are troops who don't wear receiver kits, they act to keep score and occasionally make chaos they have the "god gun" a master laser that can kill anything on the field from a lowly grunt to a full M1 Tank.
Using this they can kill for IED's or Artillery strikes.

Now Note the "Army" Are Blue tops, Also note the PLA seems to be issuing brown boots. The Boots worn by the Blue army and the REd Marines are both wearing these brown boots which looks like rough out brown leather, Black Sole and camouflaged Nylon looks like either the "Universal pattern" or the Desert pattern

Well, good theory, but I would have expected observers and refs to be issued with clearly different camo so the active participants don't get distracted or waste time trying to 'kill' them and instead focus only on the real opfor.

Also, maybe I wasn't clear before, but if you look, you will see that none of the troopers who lack receivers on their helmets have scopes (and by extension laser tags) on their rifles either. Only a few of them had radios, and those might indeed have been the observers and refs you describe, and some of the guys cutting wires and laying smoke could well have been helping to evolve the battlefield to simulate stuff like artillery and air strikes, but a lot those the guys and a couple of girls if my eyes are not failing me, with no MILES kit look to be active participants. They are taking cover and aiming their weapons.

Firstly, why bother with a blank firing weapon without laser tags? All they will be doing is making noise. Maybe that's the point, but why bother aiming and taking cover if that's the case?
