Will be interesting to see a sovremenny a piece from both the Russian navy and PLAN at a single exercise.

ditto i love to see the sovermenny do ANYTHING more:p I have a soft spot for them because they are old school, soviet/Russian designed ships that pack a lot of brute force like a Klingon vessel unlike the sexy stealth clean lines we see on all new warship designs today. I like to see the sovermenny sent to the gulf of aden for anti piracy duty but the PLAN seems to prefer their own designed ships and put the sovermennys aside:mad:

Hardly a fair comparison since the PLAN Sovs haven't really been used much whereas the Russian ones are the backbone of their fleet.

As I understand it, these are the major combatants that the Russians have sent from their Pacific Fleet:

  • RFS Admiral Nevelskoy L055, 4,100 ton (Ropucha Class LST)
  • RFS Admiral Panteleyev D585, 7,600 tons (Udaloy Class DDG)
  • RFS Bystry D715, 7.950 tons (Sovremenny Class DDG)
  • RFS Varyag C011, 12,500 tons (Slava Class CG)

A very decent set of vessels. I will add pics of each tomorrow.

Russians are here

The thing that amazes me is that most of the Russian large vessels were deigned and built during Soviet times and even today pose a huge image

The Russian Admiral is discussing Future Exercises, but from the perspective of Naval Interaction 2014

It appears that a key feature of these exercises were for the Russian and Chinese squadrons to form up and operate as a single formation and intended to become the basis for regular joint operations world wide on this basis.

As far as I am aware, this is the first time that both Navies have operated under Unitary Command.

Well, it's like the U.S. Navy Ticonderoga cruisers.

Like them, the Soviet Sovs, Udaloys, Slavas and Kirovs, have improved sensor suites and weapons systems, and then retrofitted those systems to the vessels, which has kept the vessels very potent and capable.

Same is true of the Chinese Sovs, Type 52s or the Type 51B IMHO. With decent sensors and very powerful ASMs, any navy will have to respect them.

They do have radar cross section issues...but if they can find you, with their strong ASMs they are a mortal threat anyway.
