PLAN Current Vessel Inventory Thread

It is rumoured that JIANGHU I 511 and 512 will be handed over to Bangladesh. Bangladesh in 1989 acquired JIANGHU II 556 XIANGTAN, now F18 OSMAN and refitted with 2x4 C-803 in 2009.

Perhaps you're thinking of Burma and not Bangladesh? These ships are quite old, unless if China is offering them for free (or friendship prices), I doubt either Burma or Bangladesh would want them. Cambodia, maybe.

I recall some rumors that the Bangladesh Navy wanted to upgrade their only Jianghu-class ship (F18) with HQ-7/FM-90 SAM system. Not sure if it'd ever happen, or where they'd install it on the ship.

The PLAN inventory of old major surface combatants includes13 LUDA (of which 4 modernised), 6 LUDA V (fairly new and refitted with new 100 mm guns and HY-82), 1 JIANGHU IV (training vessel), 3 JIANGHU III (refitted with HY-82), 8 JIANGHU II and 9 JIANGHU I.

I've always wondered why Luda #110 was chosen over #132 for the mod4 upgrade. They were both built to mod 2A specs but #132 is 5 years younger. Perhaps they thought they'd upgrade the rest of the Luda fleet later, which ultimately did not happen.

Very good, but slightly outdated. I first saw it 12 November 2010.

It still has 052C 172 and 173 as future units in 2 Destroyer Flotilla, which according to your later post is no longer the case, as they will go to ESF.

I think I detect 544 under Type 053H1, which is not quite accurate. It is Type 053H1Q.

franco-russe said the South Sea Fleet is China's primary blue water navy, and that certainly makes sense given its location and fleet assignment. How are the 022 missile boats distributed? Their limited range means they must be deployed primarily in the North and East Sea Fleets, correct?

That is a difficult question. I think there are eight Type 022 squadrons, but I have only been able to find seven, of which two are not precisely located. There might also be one more in ESF, somewhere in the Zhoushan area. The squadrons originally had 8 boats, but are gradually building up to 12 Type 022 each.

North Sea Fleet

Missile Boat Squadron Qingdao-Jiaonan
8 HOUBEI

Missile Boat Squadron Lushun area
8 HOUBEI

East Sea Fleet

Missile Boat Squadron Houlingtang
12 HOUBEI

31 Missile Boat Squadron Fuding
12 HOUBEI (2208-2215 plus 4)

South Sea Fleet

Missile Boat Squadron Hainan area
8 HOUBEI

208 Missile Boat Squadron Shangchuandao
12 HOUBEI

Missile Boat Squadron Shantou
8 HOUBEI

So the 022s are evenly distributed between the three fleets. That surprises me. I didn't think they had the range or sea-worthiness to be useful in the South China Sea.

The South Sea Fleet has many things to do. They have to keep an eye on the Vietnamese, and they have an important role in the Taiwan scenario. Both Shantou and Shangchuandao are situated so as to cover the southern approaches to the Taiwan Strait.

SSF also has a larger landing ship force than ESF. Just counting pennants, it has 30 versus 23 in ESF, just as Guangzhou MR has more amphibious-capable divisions (4) than Nanjing MR (3).

yeah 12 Type 052C seems unliklely that platform has much room for improvments, a new varient might be on the cards after the current batch of 4 is done ~2013

the next batch of 4 is most likely to be a new Type 052D varient

also by 2013 the 4th LPD will be in the water and Type 054As will be nearing 16 units

nevertheless i think 2013 is a important year, we will find out if all 3 ships are going to continue production

btw if u have 6 ships theres nothing stopping u from have 6 in operation, why would only 3 be in service?? escpecially since they will be new built, RN has 2 Carriers on order its not because 1 will sit in dock and 1 will serve its cus they need 2!! USN has 10-11 Carriers I am sure if needed they could put all of them to sea if wanted, i never get this 3+3 thinking? surely navys order ships based on requirments

Your logic is flawed. And Jeffhead has already explained why. So no point there. If you send them all in active service, then all back for maintenance, then you won't have a 24/7 presence. And you never ever send all your ships out at once. 12 Type 052C doesn't seem that much, they have alot of older destroyers to replace that are in serious need to be retired. Type 052C is a modern capable vessel, it will hold it's own fine.

yeah i kind of gathered that from Jeffs post about a week ago so no point there either

and read Jeffs post, he said USN can get 7 even 8 carriers at sea, thats still ~75% of thier aircraft fleet, so i dont know how u arrived at 3 LPDs in and 3 out, most likely will be 1-2 in and 4 out at sea
