happy new year china
So when is that thing actually going to get deployed and go on a world tour visiting foreign bases? :coffee: They have to get moving on that one before it turns into a national embarrassment like the "not so new" French aircraft carrier.

The Olympic clock is ticking and it would be bad if a US Navy CBG starts off-loading its sailors to watch the games while the Varyag sits dockside.

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

beautiful, looks like we are finally seeing the results of the renovation of Varyag. It no longer looks like the piece of junk from a couple of month back. I'd expect it to sail off Dalian sometimes in 2006.

Lets hope so. The lonely Kuznetsov deserves a respectable sister.

But we still havent heard jacked-shit about any carrierborne planes for China?

I'm suprised that not any pics (that isnt obiouvsly PS) of any planes has leaked out yet...

Someone provided a link recently that showed Chinese interest in SU-33 Naval Flanker. And in it, the Russians seemed interested in selling it. Sorry, but I can't remember which post in here, or who provided the link. But that's what it said.

Here's the story Sea Dog mentioned about the possible pruchase by the PRC of Russian Su-33. I cannot provide a link . I fetched this article froma yahoo group I'm a member of. I still think the Varyag may feild Mig-29's just like the Russians are providing India. This article is from Aerospace Media Publishing Autumn 2005.

CHINESE INTEREST IN Su-33

Chinese interest in aircraft carriers has entered an active phase,
and a Chinese delegation visited MAKS'2005 to carefully study all
the necessary technologies. A presentation of the Su-33 and Su-
27KUB (Su-33UB) shipborne fighters was specially arranged for the
Chinese party, including a late-evening Su-27KUB demonstration
flight during the show. The Su27KUB, which was not included in the
official list of aircraft on display, was only present at MAKS for
half a day. It was brought from Saki, Ukraine, where it is being
tested, specifically for the purpose of being presented to the
Chinese delegation.

At the beginning of August, before the MAKS exhibition, a Chinese
delegation visited St Petersburg, where it listened to presentations
by representatives of the Nevskoye PKB ship design bureau, the
designer of Russian aircraft carriers, as well as to other companies
cooperating with Nevskoye PKB. The Chinese also examined aircraft
carrier equipment, including automatic landing systems and arresting
devices. The Chinese probably visited also the Ukrainian shipyard in
Mykolayiv, which has built all Soviet aircraft carries, including
the Admiral Kuznetsov and Varyag.

The Russians have submitted a three-stage proposal with various
dates of delivery for selling Su-33 shipborne fighters:

- present version of Su-33 as used by the Russian Navy, armed only
with air-to-air missiles and intended for fleet air defence;

- modernised Su-33M version with avionics and weapons similar to
that of Su-30MK2 shore-based fighters operated by the Chinese Navy,
including Kh-31A antiship missiles;

- future advanced version of multirole shipborne fighter similar to
the shore-based Su-35 fighter presently under development.

For the time being, the two-seat shipborne Su-27KUB is considered by
the Chinese as a training aircraft only.

I just found another story. I have no idea how old it is. Check it out.

I would say the Varyag could become operational in a few months. under this much improvment and we still dont know exactly what the PLAN is going to do with the russian carrier.

There is absolutely no way that the Varyag could become operational in a few months. I would say if it was ready to go to sea today, it would still take more than a couple years time for sea trials, ship-handling training, damage control training, aircrew training, fielding the aircraft, etc, etc,....

Running a carrier is not as easy as putting a small 3,000 ton frigate in the water. There are too many complexities PLAN would need to sort out. And once you get to sea with everything operating that's just the beginning.......

sry, it was just too funny. dalian still needs to install engines and electricity, and running water. the command island isnt even finished. the plan needs to aquire aircraft. a crew, and airmen, must be trained. a group of escorts need to be formed, and the ships must practice operating together. spare parts and a repair force needs to be organized.

that will all probably take at least 3 years, if not more.

Re: Latest Varyag Pics

If Varyag will go to see this or next year (only for tests, may be, on her own power, diesels for example, 15 knots), then we know, it is not going to become a casino.

are you serious??? three years!!! thats so long. i thought it only took around 4-5 years to build a carrier, and the Varyag is half way there.
