the elevator is working
this means, the elevator engines ar working - and to make them work needs a lot of money, it would be a waste of money to do so, if you never need the big elevator in the future
so the elevator have to work in the future further more

I'm wondering what kind of weapons would Varyag be equipped withif commissioned by PLAN? Would they be typical chinese weapons or russian weapons?

99% certainly it would be fitted only wiht modest AA armament, a CIWS systems and a VLS SAM. (tough this is just my personal speculation) The current trend on carrier armamment is going towards zero, the Brithis CVF will have only options for CIWS and so on...but wheter Varyag would have any depends its role. Some are saying that the ship is going to be just a enginless prome(?) for training...if it is then no armamment wont be fitted. If it is going to be a training carrier, then only CIWS are propaply going to be fitted. SAMs will propaply be included only if the vessel is intended to see operational service. What comes to the actual SAM system, i cannot say anything certain. China hasen't got the Kinzhal system onboard Kuznetsov, nor there is any indications of PLAN showing intress towards it. This mystical HQ-16 which has been mentioned could be possiple variant (if it's even real....) and so is the new VLS version of the Shtill...but as with pretty much everything else on Varyag, we just have to wait and see...as dull it may sound...

Well if you won a jackpot from one of those onearm pirats...a wheeled carriage full of coins or chips...then you might need something to lift you on the flight deck or the otherway around...

:rofl: Now that was funny. My ex-wife, being a compulsive gambler, has won several big jackpots and could not wait to blow that money on more gambling...

Back on topic..Well the pics showing the elevator in different position mean nothing really. And trust me I want to see the Varyag operational as much as the rest of this forum...BUT There is a retired USN carrier the ex-USS Midway CV-41 in San Diego. It is now a musuem and it's elevators work just fine everyday and that ship is now 50 years old.



I'm sure it did not take much to get those elevators going on the Varyag. The proof that the ship will be operational is when it goes to sea under it's own power and not on the end of a tow cable.

I'm happy to see the Varyag thread revived!

some form of ciws for a modest protection maybe the hq-16if the pla will use her

tis old junk is not worth the money put in it a casion is the best it can do

this is the 21the centry the age of missiles large ships like this are useless unless american are steel eaters and nothing more

if the pla wants a goood carrier they can built their own this will mostly likely bea training carrier if used

right now china need subs and destoryers more then this

I must say I have serious doubts as to whether the PLAN would fix up and recommission the Varyag. At most they are using it as a R&D case study and maybe a training carrier. As I expressed in another post on a different thread, I think a PLAN carrier does not fit with China's needs and a cost efficient development strategy. A US LSD style type ship would make much more sense.

Sorry I meant an amphibious assault chopper carrier, an LPH, like the USS Iwo Jima class.

No i disagree with you. China should commission Varyag because Varyag as a large carrier can carry up to 52? aircrafts. An LPH can't fulfill what PLAN needs because it carries only helicopters. I believe PLAN already has helicopter carriers. SiChang.

Therefore i still think PLAN will comission Varyag. It's just a matter of time when they do.:china:

plabuddy, im sorry to disapoint u, but pan asian and sidious are right. varyag most like will serve as a training ship for the plan. since it was painted in a plan scheme, its probably going to be in service rather than just a tech demonstrator. if china ever decided to build a carrier, it will be a smaller, more modern, and more versatile design.

in my opinion,

- at first they will get experience in carrier operations and test, how useful a carrier could be, before they decide to build a carrier, which needs a lot of money (this could be Varjags purpose)

- and after that (decide to build a carrier) they will redesign and duplicate (by using the blue prints of) Carriers, which was studied by chinese naval ingenieers (Melbourne, Kiew/Minsk and Varjag) and which will have different purposes
--- "Melbourne"-like including catapult as amphibious carrier (same idea as PanAsian, I think)
--- "Kiew"-like including powerful weapons for escort-jobs (oil out from africa !) and
--- "Varjag"-style ... well, thats an trainee-carrier compared to US-"Big sticks"

- to design other carriers will be the third step (thats the only way to evade big mistakes, which would be a waste of money) - and the first evolutions could be mixed out from these blue prints

- now think step by step - each of these steps could need 5 to 10 Years, thats a long time at least ...

Me too!

I expect to see the Varyag opertional. I believe they will have her floated and under her own power for some type of "show" and political message during the Olympics.

I expect, sometime thereafter, within 3-5 years to see the PLAN build two full-deck carriers, just like they built the two 52Cs and 52Bs. Those will be their longer term solution, using the Varyag as a stop gap and training platform, and then as a useful compliment to the other two afterwards.

During the same time frame, I expect they will prodcue some true LPD type amphibious ships.

But that's just my opinion.
