are you serious??? three years!!! thats so long. i thought it only took around 4-5 years to build a carrier, and the Varyag is half way there.
its not only to build a carrier - you 've to got experience, which at least need additional 3 years more; the time could be shorten when PLAN got konw how from russia, brazil or india, which operate carriers.
When the Varjag comes to start sea trials in 2006 , at least she will be full operational in a CBG not before 2009 or 2010 ....

thats true, but lets remember the most important aspect of carrier operation, the actual aircraft taking of and landing....

To acomplisment a fully operational carrier airwing, it will take ANOTHER ten years...Russians commisoned Kuznetsov in 1991 and they did their first night landing and takeoff missions not untill 2003...twelwe years....

It's seems you fellows have learned something the last few months about CV's..gee I wonder where you did learn all that stuff??:)

MIGleader, Gollevainen, Sea Dog, Sczepan you are all correct. It takes years to make a CV fully operational. And even though the PLAN will get help from the Russians it will take about 5-7 years to get the ship operational to a safe & somewhat efficent standard.

As an example the newest USN CVN the USS Ronald Reagan CVN-76 short history;

Feb 12, 1998 Keel laid
Oct 1, 2000 Precommissioning Unit established
March 4, 2001 Christened by Mrs. Nancy Reagan
May 5, 2003 First underway
July 12, 2003 Commissioned
July 23, 2004 Arrived at homeport in San Diego, CA

CVN-76 still has not made a deployment. This is with many crewmembers with years of experience. It takes time to train and operate safely & effectively. Remember the USN has been operating CV's since 1922. The ship is scheduled for a deployment sometime this year.

hehe, it's time to stop showing off!

Seriously though, this is exactly why China had to start working on Varyag now. Even though China has no urgent need for a air craft carrier, it needs to start early, so that when it does need it, it would not be waiting another 10 years for one to become available.

Well..I try not to show off (-;...My point was of course even with trained sailors it takes years to get a CV operational.

You know what. No matter what nation started a CV program it will take whatever nation that is years to make it fully operational. It ain't easy!

Those are interesting Pics they seem to be moving the Varyag into a drydock or something (I'm no expert) maybe they are finally going to give it a powerplant of some sort.

Actually, I think you are right. The ship doesnt seem to be in water any longer. They must be getting ready to instal some inner material.

It seems from the picture that Varyag is in dry dock again. This is interesting. Now in my opinion, there are 2 possibilities.

1. The PLA is going to install engine and weapons on the ship.
2. It is being converted into the initially proposed casino.
What do you guys think?:china:

That doesn't look like a drydock to me. (im far from expert as well, though) What it looks like is that someone cut off the lower part of the ship's body, made it flat and then just dragged the whole ship onto some platform. Of course, since something like that makes no sense it is my conclusion that the pics are just taken from an unfortunate angle that doesnt reveal that it, in fact, still is in the water.
It does seem like its been moved from its previous location though, doesnt it?
