Re: PLAN Carrier Construction

... so you can take of with a loaded prop plane with out a ramp from a 40K carrier.
The cats on the Essex-class-carriers were used for the first aircraft of a deck-load. When the first aircraft had cleared the deck, the following aircraft had enough lenght to get airborne.

At the end of WWII simultanous landings and take offs were done with rearming and refueling aircraft in the middle of the deck. With this procedure the cats were mandatory.

Re: PRC President reviews PLAN Naval Air

Jeff, the guy's last name is Xi, not Ping ;)
Thanks, here in the west, when you see a name written out as Xi Jin Ping the presumption is that the last name is listed last.

So, when you address someone with their title, you normally just append the last name on to it...ie. President Bush, or President Clinton.

That's why I used it that way, but now upon being made aware of the mistake, I have now gone back and fixed it in my article.

Again, thanks.

I suppose we now know why the liaoning returned to dalian. This would be Xi's first stroll aboard too.

Everything and everyone certainly looks clean and smart, but they should really be using this time out at sea.

Well, a high level visit by the President specifially to the NAval Aviation Training Center and the Liaoning on the same trip, sends a very high level message.

I am sure the Admirals in the PLAN are extremely appreciative of it, as are the sailors. Nice to know that this new equipment, new policies, procedures, and logistics have the support of the leaders all the way to the top.

As I said, it also sends a message to the international community that HCina is completely serious about seeing this forward and realizing its goals.

Now that this has occurred though...time to weigh anchor and get back to it!

I'm well aware of that fact since I'm a Canadian ;)

Honestly, they should have flown Xi Jinping onto the carrier using a helicopter (or later a Y-7 AWACS) and do the inspection while the naval exercise was going on. Makes a president look more active this way.

We now know they can land and take off pretty well on a wet deck. But we still haven't seen a J-15 take off with a weapons load yet.

True, they certainly could have done that.

But he visited the Training facility first, then onto the carrier. And the carrier had recently come back from another exercise so I imagine this visit was planned well in advance to coincide with when she was in port.

Either way, his visit to both places sends a strong message, and it is a message I am sure those sailors and personnel involved with all aspects of the program appreciate.

Gosh that would be rather indulgent. Last thing you need during a naval exercise or flight tests, is your head of state flying out for a dog and pony show.

Would be almost as bad as bush and his infamous speech aboard the Ab Lincoln after touching down in dramatic fashion aboard an S-3.

This inspection of the ship and the training facilities should be as high profile as it gets. Let rhetoric and support speak through landing more J-15s on deck, more training out at sea, more flat tops under construction.

Good photo op for Xi too, and a way to imply if the navy goes and looks for trouble with Japan and philipine, the political leadership won't be too unhappy.
