So, has it been confirmed that "Shi Lang" is indeed the name of the new carrier?

I would not call it confirmed. Janes indicated a report (unconfirmed) had come out to that extent and so a lot of places are taking it for granted (as am I) and will update should it prove incorrect.

Shi Lang is not confirmed, it's presumed.

I still don't think it would be named "Shi Lang". First of all, Chinese Navy names its ships with cities and locations, not person's names. Secondly, Shi Lang is not very famous in China. If they wanted to name it after a person, it would more likely be "Zheng He", not Shi Lang.

I think many think Shi Lang sounds possible because he conquered Taiwan. However, Shi Lang was a Chinese general who used to serve the old Ming dynasty and Taiwan and later surrendered to Qing. This made him a traitor who helped his enemy defeat his old boss. I don't think this sits well with the Chinese govn't. I think traditionally, Chinese leaders have a thing against people who switch sides. there is an old saying: those who switch sides cannot be trusted (If he/she switches once, he/she will switch again...). Plus, the Chinese govn't has been glorifying all the Chinese national heroes forever, like Zheng He, Yang's generals and Yue Fei, but no one ever mentioned anything about Shi Lang. I mean ever! I bet most Chinese people don't even know who Shi Lang actually was, except what the famous author Jin Yong described in his fictional novel, Count of Mount Deer.

You may well be right. I believe everyone is simply going along with the report from Jane's because they are well known and in the absence of anything else official. When the official name and pennant number are announced, you will see all the sites chenge accordingly, including mine, LOL!

i'd wish that china names more flagships in the names of famous historical figures. a great way to display chinese history and pride, since if anything, china has the greatest supply of historical figures and running out is the least of their concerns

Since Zheng He already being used, it's even more unlikely that it'd used here as well. Using the name Shi Lang isn't a smart move either, as you've pointed out his past is checkered.

But then it points out how little people in the west knows of China's past (guessing the name as Shi Lang was first panned around by Jane's, after all), and even more so China's lack of noticeable admirals worthy of such honor.

But would they name it after any of the past party leaders? Not likely either, for China has long moved past such worthless idoling (ok, they still preserved Mao's body in Beijing, but the Russian still can't decide what to do with Lenin, either), they can name the carrier class ships after provinces, or tier 1 cities - those would be safer bet; if they want some political flavor, they can name after major battlefields that the CCP won the day.

Ill go along with Vesicles on this one, can you imagine the US navy naming one of her ships the " Benedict Arnold"?

Slightly off topic, they might name auxiliary ships after famous engineers and inventors, including the inventors of paper and printing with moving type ( was that a Mr Ping in the 11th century ) and taking the opportunity to include historical engineers from India, the Muslim world and the West.
