What the hell is up with the female sailors' haircuts? Their hair makes them look like young boys. I can barely distinguish some of them from the men. Allowing a little feminine pride would probably improve morale among both the male and female sailors. Forcing women to look like men is insulting.
If you look at female athletes from China (doing very active sports like soccer), you'll notice a lot of them also have very short hairs. I think it's more to do with shorter hairs are easier to manage when you are very active.

Saying something is meant to be a joke does not automatically make the comment inoffensive to others. Make a better judgement next time.

At least one girl in the pictures have relatively long hair in a pony tail, so I doubt its regulations that is forcing them to wear their hair short.

My guess is that the girls chose to keep their hair short for practicality reasons. Long flowing locks might be sexy, but they do take time and effort to look after or they turn on their owners. On a ship, I am also not sure how much water allowance everyone gets, so having to regularly wash your hair might mean one has to make sacrifices to make the rations stretch, which the women might not be willing to make, such as showering less or for shorter periods.

In addition, when working in an enclosed space, especially if there are machinery operating close by, having long flowing hair can be a safety hazard. Having to always wear a hat or hair net could just be more trouble than it is worth to keep their hair longer.

Whatever the reason, it looks like a choice each girl made rather than one made for them, so I don't see any problems with that.
Good points, especially about safety. Long hair is a major safety hazard when working around rotating equipment. There was a student at Yale University who died two years ago when her hair was sucked into a piece of lab equipment.

But female sailors in other navies have adapted to naval life without having to look like men. For example:

As another poster noted, Chinese female athletes have the same man-like short hair cuts even when there is no reason to. When I was watching Olympic table tennis, only the Chinese players' haircuts looked like men, not the women from South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Singapore. Do Chinese schools suppress feminine identity? Are they worried that if an athlete or sailor is good-looking, they will be a distraction among the crew? There is something unique in Chinese military and athletic culture regarding women's appearance that is very unusual.

If anything, China is one of the few countries in the world that encourages female identity and educates female from a young age to believe that they are as strong as male. Mainland China is perhaps the only society that does not require female to change their family names to those of their husbands. In modern China, buying a house before marriage and letting their future husbands move into their houses has become a trend for young women in China. they believe they, as female, are as capable as male and should bare the same responsibility as male to support their families. So there is no such thing as suppressing female identity. Having short hair has absolutely nothing to do with female identity. My sister has had short hair all her life and she does it because it's more convenient. In fact, it is a good indication of individuality. They do what they feel right and don't care about status quo and what others might think/say about it.

Geez someone thinks all values are universal and that women should look as feminine as possible.Does he even know how most high school girls look like in China?

The world still turns when it doesn't work in a certain way. Is it any of our business though?

I'm sorry what? All the women in those images have much longer hair than the men, and you can even spot a pony tail on one of them.

Wait, let me try something. Hmmm...

Female US Marines with tied, or short hair... (Or are they men, oh no, I can't tell.)

Oh my, is America suppressing femininity?! LOL.

The answer is no. XD . The entire line of discussion on this has been hilarious so far.

Now would be a good time to get back to anti-piracy discussions right?

I don't know how sailors in any navy can practice marksmanship when the ship bobbing up and down? How the heck can one accurately "zero in" on your weapon by making adjustments on the aim sights after firing a few rounds?

Just guessing here, but training to shoot accurately with the ship bobbing up and down is probably the point.
