Re: Somali pirates and Chinese navy

Unless they completely fabricated the incident, that would mean they had to coordinate it with the Chinese. Which goes against Chinese interests to play ball. Back then it was reported that China couldn't even muster a decent patrol capability due to lack of training and men to crew their subs. For a Song to catch the Kitty Hawk it would've had to have been a coordinated effort with probably more than one sub involved.

well if China's sub crews were so poorly trained that they cant even coordinate with the kitty hawk, what makes you think that they are good enough to penetrate its defense? besides kitty hawk must have been on a high level of alert at the time since it was in an exercise.

I wonder if the Indian Navy drew the short straw to keep tabs on the Chinese ships, and then share the info around its allies like Us, UK, etc etc.
Early Popeye suggested their might be some 093s doing escort duty. If some did go, at what point would they have detached and gone back, or would they still be hanging around.

I never argue that the Chinese are superior or "good enough." I question the hype claimed by the other side. According to all those on the other side... it's to the contrary. Virtually all of them say the Kitty Hawk battle group was not on alert at all to which is the reason why the Kitty Hawk did not detect the Song.

The Indians and the Chinese haven't been the best of neighbours. Both sides are naturally suspicious of each other. I am not terribly surprised by the fact that the Indians are snooping around the Chinese fleet for this reason alone.

The submarine in the picture provided is an Indian Kilo class submarine, probably the INS Sindhuvir, which has a pennant number of S58.

No more talking of the Kitty Hawk. Keep the thread on the straight course based on the topic.

That's very specific considering India has 10 Kilos, what makes you think its the Sindhuvir specifically?

Indian Kilos are not the particularly quieter subtype, since they are Type 877s not 636s which the PLAN has. The difference between the two is that the 636 has the quieter propeller and running gear. So beating them, and it looks like they were pinged like crazy to get them to surface, is still not that big of a deal in terms of ASW. Of course, a little exercise won't hurt and it only heightens the awareness in the PLAN. This deserves a little pat in the back but beware, this is not like beating a world class state of the art SSK.

Aren't ALL Indian Kilos 877s though? What makes the Sindhuvir different from the other Indian Kilos? Why does Pointblank think it was the Sindhuvir specifically?
