Just heard from the news, China is going to send 171 169 and 887. But, why 171?

I can't understand 171 either.I guessed 167 and 169 before.

that's because, like i said, the real intention isnt even to fight pirates. its a show of force and increased commitment to international affairs, prolly a bit of testing out the new ship's longdistance travel and combat capability as well. besides, this is a good chance for China to revert its non-interventionist policy and actually does things abroad.

So I heard, it is indeed been confirmed that 171, 169 and 887 will leave on Dec 26th. A very surprising choice by the very least. My guess is that they need the radar on 171, but I don't understand why they chose 169 instead of 167, I thought 167 would be the better choice since she has helicopter hanger for two.

Well at least I'm looking forward to see their newest destroyers in action.

My guess is the reasons I stated here two days ago. They might probably want to test the 052C's PARs searching against sea targets too, despite being limited by height.

They may need to send a ship with more powerful sea search radar capability, and the 052B and 052C maybe more powerful than the 051B in that regard. Between the 052B and the 052C, the 052B maybe the more powerful of the two thanks to the combination of the Fregat radar and the Bandstand radar, whereas the 052C only has the Bandstand/Mineral ME style radar. The Bandstand radar can give OTH capabilities for the search. The 051B lacks both.

That also means the 054A can serve as the option. The Jiangweis won't have the same search capability.

Sending the 171 certainly defies my expectation. Does either crew on the 169 and 171 have experience in long term deployment?

Neither but then again, that's probably the other reason why they're sent. To gain experience. Unless of course, they got crew members and officers that had long term deployment while serving in other ships.

I am surprised that they send the top of their arms. Anyway it is the best way to test their actual capacity

Indeed, if something was to go wrong (have no idea what could though), it would be even more an embarassment.
The fact is though that it is the shiny new technology that needs testing and operational experience...If they were to send some old ships, the experience gain would be minimal, even if it was the first long-term, long-range deployment for some time for the PLAN.

I dont think China will send a FAC to the African waters. There would be some very involved logistics in preparing and sending a FAC to Africa.

Not to mention once there, you'll need a home base or a mother ship. Though the FACs high speed would match up very well with the pirates' speedboats.
