that reminds me, since China sent its best warships, the americans and indians will definitely be interested in "testing" it out as much as the PLA itself does. that really raises the potential for unannounced standoffs which we would not know about except through unconfirmed rumours.

So does the same logic as the J-10s going public apply? Is there something new around the corner?

Not to mention once there, you'll need a home base or a mother ship. Though the FACs high speed would match up very well with the pirates' speedboats.

Helicopters can negate that speed very well... although I am not sure that Chinese naval helicopters carry a machine gun of some sort to use...

So, why we are sending the 171 to somali?
First, I think any ship battle group has to have both anti-ship capability and anti-air capability. Even though the pirates don't have any planes or any forms of air force, the threat may come from other factors. What if India starts a battle with Pakistan? So, the 169/171 will definitely give India some pressure. And if China helps Pakistan, can you say that India won't attack the ship from air?

Secondly, as everyone has agreed, the mission will bring a lot of experience especially to handle the two top ships. T he mission will last for several month, so younger commanders and soldiers will gain a lot of experience too.

That is all part of arrainging the logistics. Yemen, the UAE and Bahrain all have fine international ports that could host and serve as a logistic point for the PLAN. We shall have to wait and see what shakes out.

Hm I wonder if the real object may be to claim the naval base in Gwadar pakistan before the american can react.

It can also be for show and face. Since the anti-piracy patrols involve an international coalition, sending some older ships may not look so cool compared to what other navies may be sending. Everyone has pride and ego.

Read the statements in the below captions. I think the real intention is to protect Chinese shipping. If the Chinese use the Pakistani bases so be it. The US will always be watching.

The PLAN has offically anounced the deployment to three warships to protect it's shipping in the Gulf of Aden and eastern African waters.

Re: Somali pirates and Chinese navy

I was actually totally caught off guard by this fleet. They are basically sending the best that they have over there. Interesting enough, 168 and 170 are said to be the replacement ships once the first 3 months of duty is over.
