They're weapons may be old and rusty but their intelligence is quite good, they all have GPS, and radio equipment and people on the 'inside' of major ports in the Indian ocean feed them info about what is going where, the reason there are so many attacks is because the pirates generally know when to pick their battles

Inside is probaly right. They seem to know the when and where of the merchant ships movements.

If we take the merchant ships, coalition force and all of us on one side and the pirates on another side as the enemy. This would be the worst thing for us. An ancient Chinese proverb said "知己知彼, 佰戰不殆" translated as "To know oneself and to know your enemy, there will no defeat in battle". The pirates seem know us very well, but we know nothing about them.

My concern is no matter how many war ships we send to the gulf, can we ensure to defeat the pirates? I heard from somewhere that Somalia currently is in a lawless situation. This means that everybody in the country can become pirates any time and Somalia is the big base of them. To fight the pirates but not to solve the problems in its country just like the way you cut the grasses but not to dig off its roots. The war will never end.

why does china wants to be involved in the Somali piracy issue? I thought they were our friends and I really trusted china to be Africa's friend and not involved in African issues as the Europeans are.

Somali piracy exists as a weapon of defense to fend off all these companies and countries in Europe and south Asia dumping there waste and fishing off our waters. its not a problem created by Somalis and Somalia but by people who want to won our territory and dump their chemical garbage in our waters.

why didn't china and all this countries who are so worried start paroling now? why didn't they do it when the other countries were fishing our fish and dumping garbage in our waters?

Because these 'friends' attacked Chinese ships, hurt, kidnapped and even killed Chinese citizens. Its that simple.

China's decision to send ship was made after the UN resolution was passed, and as a permanent member of the UNSC, it's more of a responsibility. Also, the Somali govt. did invite China to help.

Given, Somali piracy is the result of an ineffective government and overfishing/exploitation of local waters, and a long term solution is to provide an stable livelihood to the Somali fishermen who were driven to the corner.
The long term solution requires time and an effective governance, hence this might be hard to implement. Therefore, the best solution in the short run is to patrol the surrounding waters, and this is in the common interests of all nations.
This is also in the interest of Somalia, since the commanders of these pirates have ties to or are warlords themselves, which contributes to the chaos that is Somalia for the past decade or so.

China's foreign policy advocates the non-interference of internal affairs of other nations, so ships were dispatched after the UN resolution and the invitation of the Somali govt. They are also their to protect their commercial shipping interests, as all nations there are.

Here's part of a China Daily article that mentions a Somali official welcomes China's involvement in the anti-piracy campaign.

Somalia welcomes Chinese naval presence

Somalia welcomes the presence of the Chinese navy to fight pirates in its waters, the ambassador of the African nation in Beijing has said.

"We hope China joins the efforts of the international community in supporting the Somali government," Mohammed Awil said on Monday, responding to media reports that China could dispatch a fleet to the Gulf of Aden, where most of the piracy attacks have been concentrated.

Since July, the United Nations has adopted three resolutions urging the international community to respond to the piracy menace off the Somalia coast.

On Monday, a French naval detachment is reported to have begun escort duties in the troubled Indian Ocean waters off the Somali coast as part of an EU anti-piracy naval operation.

But Awil said the presence of foreign naval missions is not a long-term solution, and sought international help for Somalia to build its own naval capability.

"The international community should help our government build up the Somali navy, and then our own navy will take the responsibility of safeguarding Somali waters," Awil told China Daily.

He said his country has a naval presence in the northeast of the country, but it is hamstrung by old ships which are no match for the hit-and-run tactics of the pirates.

"So the solution is capacity building (for the Somali navy)," he said, urging help in logistics, equipment and training.

Apart from problems at sea, the Somali ambassador, who has been in Beijing since 2005, urged the global community to offer "serious help" to counter Somalia's domestic chaos.

A civil war which broke out in 1991 has left large swathes of the country under the control of anti-government forces. But the domestic situation may get even worse, as roughly 3,000 Ethiopian peacekeepers are due to withdraw by the end of the year, leaving a security vacuum.

Awil said it was the responsibility of the international community to send peacekeepers to fill the vacuum.

"The government has again and again requested the international community to send peacekeeping troops," Awil said, adding he didn't know why "they are not taking on the responsibility".

He said the world may regret it one day as extremism has already taken root in Somalia.

"Now it is piracy; we don't know what will come next," Awil said.

On the pictures where two Somali pirates are aiming their guns, there appears to have been a beer can thrown at them and the foam is all over the deck. The other picture shows a crew member emptying beer bottles so they can make them into molotov cocktails. In the last picture, there are empty case cartons of the beer turned into molotov cocktails. (Makes me kind of wonder why the ship is carrying that much beer?)

Trivia:

The Zheng Hua series of ships (the ship here is no. 4, there are many more of them) are crane carrying ships. They look odd, but that's because they're specially made to carry the cranes you see in shipyards and ports. This particular ship, the Zheng Hua 4, has a displacement of around 60,000mt.

If you read the text, you'll find that they stated that there were 15 cartons of beers, which I guest it should be 12 bottles per carton. So 15 cartons for 30 of them on such a long journey is not much at all.
