Also, keep in mind pictures of the partially built Ulyanovsk hull show it was built by the traditional plate on longitudinal framing technique, not modular technique. This means Kuznetsov was likely also built in the same manner. This means the Chinese carrier must be structurally significantly different from Kuznetsov just to accommodate totally different construction technique. If they were willing to embark a this departure, which would effect the detailed design of every part of the hull, it is hardly plausible they would shy away from getting rid of the remnants of a unwanted compartment.

I just wanted to do a quick comparison between the Liaoning and the hull being currently constructed. Seems like a fairly close match.

May be the top brass are not too happy with pictures of 001A being passing around in internet. Recent photos are getting not only smaller in size but also heavily made low clarity.

It is said that hangar module #8, a block of hangar floor has been added.

..as I've stated many, many times.."What's the big secret?" Of course the builder would have to get the PLAN permission to post photos such as these. Oh well..that's how the PLAN rolls.

Last comment.. compare these two photos. Look at the progress on the ship from 03.2011 to 02.2012. No way the new PLAN CV will be launched in 2016. Just my opinion.

CVN-78 was christened on 11.09.2013. the drydock was flooded(ship floated) on 10.13.2013.

My guess is if the hull would be launched as soon as it would float, then it could be launched in the first half of 2017. If the hull won't be launched until it is structurally complete and partially fitted out, which I think is more likely given this is their first, it won't launch until mid 2018. I would say the current hull is 3 years from completion.

This probably also depends on the next use of this dock. With the current decrease in World shipbuilding there might not be much of a hurry to get the ship out. If PLAN wants a similar ship asap ( which I think unlikely, unless they think the World is fast getting dangerous ) then she would be floated out earlier.

It's not a secret when you've been building vessels like these for the greater part of the 20th century and have something newer (i.e. Gerald Ford class CVN) in development.

It becomes a very valuable secret when the ship (i.e. Type 001A) is the very first indigenous carrier that you've developed and built (and hence a major step in an area in which the PLAN is not familiar).

Thus own weaknesses remain undetected, military secrets be made.

I disagree with the notion that they're keeping tight wraps around the carrier's construction because they're secretive about the process of construction a carrier.

Rather, I think they are being secretive because they do not want outside observers to know the latest progress on the carrier and to avoid them from gleaning potentially more detailed information about the ship.

Remember, this degree of high operational security is not only for carriers, but for all other high profile Chinese military projects as well, from J-20 to Y-20 to nuclear submarines to destroyers and AOEs. Knowing how to develop and construct them are not "secrets" because many countries in the world have the knowledge. What the Chinese military are seeking to hide is to prevent outside observers from getting a clear understanding of the progress they are making in terms of the construction progress final operational capability.

That is the same reason why we almost never get pictures of Liaoning, or why we get almost no pictures of any new high profile weapon system training or standard operations.

What is not secret for the USN could still be very valuable for other nation's intelligence gathering efforts. They have a number of countries to watch out for.
