My name is Mitchell. I am from the Netherlands and serve in the Royal Netherlands Navy.

However the DA has no meaning...
And Mitch is my shortened name.
The Damitch comes from MSN since my name was already used. They suggested damitch. And my previous nickname was Mitchell300 (also msn suggestion).
I mixed them later on for a 3rd email adress haha.
Hence the nickname.

Ontopic...
How do you know for certain that peace of hangar will be the extra bit?
The ship can still be a different design then the Kuznetsov. Might have a complete different internal and added workshops?
In case of Kuznetsov. Is this the space for the large ASM?

And do we now know for sure that the hangar is higher?
Wich also suggests a total different carrier...

First welcome to SDF.

Secondly, to answer your questions, we all don't know for sure until it is fully completed and we get more specifications from it later on in time.

Yes, new build, but not a new design. Modification would require some redesign, but based on recent development, I believe PLAN is being ultra conservative and that there isn't going to be any difference between this ship and Liaoning.
You ould be right of course.

But I think there will be some relatively minor...but telling...changes.

1) I believe they will remove the old SSM silos and provide more space
2) I believe there will be slight improvements to the island.
3) I believe they will lengthen the hanger spaces nominally.
4) I believe they will improve logistics and munitions handling

On the Kuznetsov the bow is not a place where the aircraft will be loaded with weapons. This will be similar to the Liaoning or her sister ship.
I know full well that it is going to be similar to the Liaoning. In fact, I have been saying that very thing for years.

But they can improve the Varyag design as being operated with the Liaoning.. One of the improvements would be to remove the SSM silos and open up those spaces for other uses.

Since there is more of the vessel to be built on the bow, the location of the large opening forward could provide access to the flight deck near to the bow launch points.

Time will tell.

I am here since March 2011 ;)
Only mostly on the ocean or just watching haha.
I am currently in school to become OR4/5 (Corporal in the Dutch navy) so a bit more time to be active.

haha

But lets not stay offtopic or Jeffhead will banhammer us. Thanks for the welcoming.

For the improvements of the island exists already evidence.

In addition, I expect the following changes:
- More comfortable accommodation for the crew
- Improved communication between the individual areas of the vessel
- Better air conditioning of rooms
- Automation wherever possible to save personnel
These improvements need much space.

Kuznetsov class allegedly had ships crew numbering over 1600. French Cdg dropped that to 1200. QE class has that number dropping to just 700. I really expect the new carrier to go for similar changes.

1000-ish people manning the ship and another 700 or so for the air wing is really enough for a carrier of such size. And it'd still mean savings of hundreds of people (rooms, supplies etc) which should then be realized as more space for fuel/weapons storage, perhaps a big longer hangar etc.
