Just out of curiosity, which US fleet did you serve in?

I've was assigned to the 7th but in USN that's not necessarily how the rotation usually works. Depending on your tour or duty assignments you can be in more than one fleet in your career. Also it depends on your rating or job function. Most folks follow their ships or subs, aviators are assigned squadrons etc and follow their CAW (Carrier Air Wings) or fo to their respective NAS (duty stations). Some are shore based but not many left anymore. If you want to know more you can PM me.

Patient my friend patient.
I would not bo surprised to see 12 new aircraft delivered to the Chinese navy next month.

An other point: on that Ouija board there were only one type of aircraft and two types of helicopters. That gives the first carrier air wing the same limited capability the british harrier/sea king airwings had.

LOL.. well thanks BD.. I appreciate the compliment! Coming from you it's an honor for sure. HOOYAH!
On some things, old school is still the best type of 'school'.

Thanks shipmate! aarrrvvv!.. On the JFK I wished I worked in Pri Fly.. the air boss had it worked out so those mates got their chow brought to them..no chow line when your an airman is a big thing..

In my time I served in several fleets. 6th, 7th and 5th. What my man, kwaigonegin, from Missouri states is very true.

Did you know that USN ships change fleets depending on where said ship is located.

So in other words a "Fleet" is assigned a Geographic Area and if you sail in to that area you become part of it right?

Certainly saves time in getting a fleet in position I suppose!

Exactly!

Sixth fleet is assigned to the Eastern & Northern Atlantic & Mediterranean Sea
Fifth Fleet is assigned to the Persian Gulf Region & Indian Ocean
Seventh Fleet is assigned to the Western Pacific Ocean
Third Fleet is assigned to the Eastern and Northern Pacific
Fourth Fleet is assigned to the Caribbean and South American shores.

Except Su-33/j-15 is much longer legged, vastly more capable and tremendously more potent than the sea harrier.

Incidentally, the current US carrier airwing also consist of just 1 fixed and 1 rotary wing tactical aircraft type. in this respect the only significant American type mix advantage is a fixed wing AWAC support type, which the Chinese appear to also be working on.

The reason, as you may know, the US went with one type of airframe ,Hornet, is commonality of parts and maintenance. This is of course a cost cutting move.

By the way each CVN deployed has two C-2 Greyhounds by Grumman aboard. They share many common parts with the E-2 Hawkeye.

I'd like to know what sort of ability the Chinese will have to repair aircraft aboard ship. They do break down. Naval aircraft require a great deal of maintenance to keep them flying.

Not only that, but supporting only one aircraft type means more spare parts can be carried. When crap hits the fan, the carrier can support its air wing for much longer duration.

It's amazing that the Ouija board is still alive and well in carrier operations in 2013. We're talking 75 yr old pen and paper technology and until very recently NOTHING has come close to replacing a piece of cardboard and some nuts, bolts and screws.
Even the most advanced computers and processors is a poor substitute for placing screws on paper airplanes.

I know the Ford class CVN will have this fancy electronic version of the Ouija Board but it bascially still does the same EXACT thing except it's projected on monitors with electronic data feed and cost literally a 100000 X more LOL.

Either way any airboss or miniboss worth his salt better be stashing away some colored screws and cardboard cutout of the flight deck somewhere close by as a surefire backup.

If the monitor blacks out, delay in processing, OS freezes up etc not only will aircraft handling comes to a standstill but potential for accidents on the flight deck is very likely. This problem will be magnified exponentially when it's during expanded sortie rates such as in a crisis or war.

I'm not a big fan of this electronic display gizmo... Up in Pri Fly when things are hot and heavy and stressful..sometimes you need something tangible.. something old school where you can literally feel, touch, move etc..like in a chess game. electronic chess is ok but nothing beats playing it old school where you have to use you hands to move the pieces etc. Technology can't replace that just yet IMHO.

What about the next future Nimitz class having a giant touch screen type "Ouija Board"? Where if the electronic screen goes out, but still display the outline of the carrier to still use the old fashion nuts and screw tangible method.
