little information regarding the development of Chinese naval reactor, but info about the Chinese nuclear reactor for submarine beginning emerge, for example Stanford uni. professor William louis book claim that PLAN nuclear heavy water nuke reactor for first.gen. attack sub has 48mw output.while SSBN carry 58MW reactor..but a 2008 scientific report prepare by Chinese research lab Chinese nuclear submarine power by a 90mw nuclear reactor.but no matter if it's a 48 or 90mw output, still way behind the Los Angeles class SSN,which has 150MW output nuclear reactor.
if PLAN do plan to construct a nuclear power carrier, there are lot of technical huddle to overcome.

Where did the talk of a nuclear powered carrier come from? I don't think anyone expects China's first indigenous CV to be nuclear powered... running out negative things to say about China's CV?

Yup.. Build another Lioaning like ship followed by a couple of CVs and then CVNs but I'll be an old man by the time PLAN's first indegenous CVN commissions so I don't really care.
Well, I know how you feel. I am 57 years old now, so if we project...

1st indegenous starts building now, finished in 4 years, commissioned two years later. So I am 63 then.

2nd and 3rd indegenous carriers, convetnional. One starts in 2016 finished in 2020, commissioned in 2022, the 2nd a couple of years behind it so in 2024, it commissions. I am 68 years old then.

Whew. Now lets say they start a nuclear carrier in 2026, it takes six years to build (new stuff, harder to do, 1st time thing), and then two more years to commission, so it commissions in 2034, now I am 78 years old...if I am still kicking then. I just might live to see it. At that point, China will have just produced their fifth carrier.

Of course by then, the US will have produced the Jonh F. Kennedy, CVN-79, the Enterprise, CVN-80, and two others, CVN-81, and CVN-82 so that by that date there are five Ford Class carriers, and the remaining six Nimitz class still in service.

Lot's of water will have passed under the bridge by then. Who knows what the world will be like?

...wer're talking 21 years from now.

Yes, we will be older than dirt, only the dark lord will be older, and I have it on good intell that he has used his Jedi powers to preserve himself at a remarkable 25 years old, but his wifey has him on a short string in Iowa, no cruises and no fun! LOL, bout as far away from the OCEAN as a man can get, what about that Pop-Eye, do you still have those yearnings, to hear the big boss spoil up and prepare to get underway, to feel those huge props cranking up and once on the open ocean, accelerating to flank.....to hear and feel those screaming memes coming aboard!
All things the crew of the Liaoning will never forget-it will be a part of them, I will never forget my first night-time turbo-prop firing up, and my first take-off I blew right through our assigned altitude------zzzzoooooooooooooooom, ka-blewie! ATC caught it right away as did my command pilot, he didn't speak to me for 500 miles-really he was ticked! brat

Kind of make sense for Shanghai to attempt the smaller LHD first if they are building a new cat carrier from scratch. Plus 40k+ tons is not that small. Dalian will probably aim to push out a Liaoning similar ski jump carrier. I hope they shrink the island significantly.

I agree, the situation right now buzzing with carries, Izumo Class and rest of them, now news is splashing over about flat tops from China

I believe as we speak the LHD is under construction at Shanghai and so is the carrier at Dalian

Time for small ships is passing now the big boys are on the agenda, LHD, carriers and cruisers

yup but more importantly is that it's very good news if those things are still going as we've projected. It means that the world as we know it is still alive and kicking, the world economy is relatively healthy and it means that we have not bomb ourselves back to the stoneage or have some advanced alien race annihilate us, asteroid hitting, spanish flu II etc :)

So for the optimist in me I am HOPING and WISHING that in 20 years China and the US will be building CVNs, LHAs, LHDs etc at a normal healthy rate and have thousands of F-35s, J-20s and J-31s flying all over the place. Not against each other but maybe even flying together.

A naval propulsion reactor using heavy water? I think that would be the first in the world. It would reduce the amount of neutrons absorbed by the moderator so reduce the amount of uranium enrichment necessary but would it worth while?

Liaoning is due to head out again sometimes in the middle of August.

She is busy and looks like PLAN is making full use of her for training.

压水 = pressured water, not heavy water

In regards to the length concern with the carrier elevators. If the J-31 was to be the PLAN carrier fighter it would fit comfortably into the elevators right? Considering J-15 is ~22m in length it barely fits onto the elevator, and J-31 estimated length is ~17m. That's plenty of room for J-31 to operate on the Liaoning.

Since the J-15 is very large, it was estimated by this forum that maximum of only 30 could be fit into the carrier. If it was to say be equipped with J-31 wouldn't that squeeze a few more in since its significantly smaller?

Right and I have no doubt that was on Shenyangs mind when the J-31 was conceived, built, and flown, but it almost appears the sweet little J-bird is on ice for the present, my guess is that aircraft are a secondary concern, with carriers as the first priority at the present time, and sucking up lots of development moneys...... just an educated guess, I hope Shenyang proves me wrong and gets this bird up and going soon. brat
