Given there aren't even magazines in the rifles I think they were just told to "do X", and then "do it again with more gusto" until the photographers went away

I bet they told the soldiers to keep the lens covers on because of the superior revolutionary aesthetics. But seriously, according to @QIUSIYU, photographers don't give soldiers specific instructions, meaning the soldiers did the dumb things voluntarily. It's either cheeky sabotage or poor basic training, or both.

Even a normal person can tell that with the lens cap on, nothing is visible. Yet you still eagerly use staged photos to push your most malicious assumptions about the Chinese military.

From the second to the fourth photo, thermal or microlight scopes are used, and the cover does not affect the use at all,The lid has a small round hole

What is your point? How does your statement contribute to this thread?

There is only one possible passive night vision scope (4th image) in those images. The 2nd and 3rd image show the IR5118 infrared scopes, which require the lens caps be removed to operate. How does a former PAP soldier not know thermal scopes can't operate when their lenses are obstructed?

Even a normal person can tell that with the lens cap on, nothing is visible. Yet you still eagerly use staged photos to push your most malicious assumptions about the Chinese military.

How do you know these photos are staged? You told me official photographers don't give specific instructions, and that "they don't care how you wear your bulletproof undershirt or how your gun accessories are mounted".

The IR5118 thermal imaging sight features a circular aperture on its protective cover, allowing target acquisition through the opening even when the cover remains closed.Furthermore, do not misrepresent my statement. What I clearly conveyed is that we must adhere to the operational protocols mandated by military correspondents when conducting photography, not that correspondents refrain from providing specific tactical directives. Moreover, military correspondents often demand we don body armor and mount accessories on rifles or SMGs solely for photogenic purposes, yet neglect to ensure proper tactical configuration of the equipment before directing us to pose—prioritizing visual aesthetics over operational readiness validation.
