PLA Small arms

Personally I don't think this is Type-81; the magazine, the butt stock, the muzzle are all different. Do you have any link to that gun?

Its a Type 81. Chambered for 7.62x51 NATO and with a entirely new rail system and muzzle break.

It has turned the Type 81 into a real Battle Rifle. Alternate version chambered for the traditional 7.62x39 also exists.

I hope that this weapon becomes eventually widespread in the PLA, even if only for the special forces, to help to address the lack of lethality on long ranges coming from the 5.8x42 caliber standard.

Its unlikely at best Insig. This is in my view a export gun for Africa and Latin America. Two places in the world where the Norinco can still find openings for there products and have a taste for the 308 win round. They might also get options for Pakistan and Afghanistan.
In Africa this gun would likely sell like hot cakes. Where Fal and G3s in Army stock have warn out from years of use in brush fire wars these would offer a modernized option for replacement with a bargain basement price compared to HK417,AR10, Scar-H or other offers from the west.
in Latin America I see this aimed at Argentina.

The best route I see for Correcting the range issue for the PLA and it is a issue IMO, would be to either introduce a modernized Type 85 with improved ergonomics, Rail interface and cut down barrel. as the 7.64x54R round offers superior range to the 7.62x51mm. Or introduce a 7.62x54mm variant of the QBU88 series. then introduce a 7.62x54mm R calibre Medium Machine gun based on either a reduced weight Type 80 MG or a scailed up QJY88 feeding form the same round along side a reduced weight QJY88 for Infantry and Airborne.

Forget to post this from mp.net.
China Police Equipment Exhibition 05.20.2014.

A modified Type 81 assault rifle from China. Model CS/LR14 Manufactured for mainly export. All facets of the weapon, muzzle flash suppressor, rifle, magazine, have all the latest updates. (Sina military)

At least they understand that modern rifle for made for export needs rails from the start. I wonder how long it takes before we see them making similar variant of the QBZ-03.

Upgraded QBZ-03 in that same exhibition. They put scope like that on it instead of red dot or something similar usually found in rifles.... it's supposed to look cooler?

Those are Type81, in fact it is the modernized version, with almost full-length tactical rail mount and side rail mounts, polymer components, chambered for 7.62mm NATO, a humble interim design (that's what Type81 designated for, to meet the need till the new design that eventually resulted in QBZ95 was ready) got radically modernized.

Most likely because somebody thought that'd look cool. But it ain't if you ask me.

I was curious, so I did a supplier/product search on Alibaba.com for Picatinny rails and optical sights, and wow, I got thousands of hits out of Mainland China. Of course, as you said, many are knockoff products, non-military grade, or suppliers with no R&D capabilities.

BUT.

The sheer number of suppliers and products on offer tells me that a robust industrial base is there for firearm accessories, and should the Chinese military opt for fancy rails and red dot sights in the future, it'll have no problem whatsoever arming the troops with something decent.

The majority of the buyers for these items are airsoft players.
In the airsoft world, they like to have what they call "full markings" which is the logos and trademarks.
For some reason, they like to be as realistic looking as possible. They even wear replica nigh vision goggles/monocles on their NVG helmet mount, but the funny thing is that they are dummy non-functioning units. LOL :p
It's funny that they take it so serious, like those civil war re-enactment people.

fyi; I have seen these China made red dot sights and holographic sights being sold by less than scrupulous vendors at gun shows in the US
