I was just arguing with someone who didn't think the 052 refitted isn't going to be used as a primary ASW vessel.
Not sure about the tweet but the suggestion.
Impossible to conclude but here's two pieces of literature on this event.
Do you have any insight into this?
I find it hard to believe that a single Type 054A could convincingly detect and track Virginias from any useful range.
It would have to be a combination of Y-8/9 ASW aircraft and whatever else is used by PLAN to do this job. If it were that easy, the Americans would be in a rush to replace or improve their SSNs?

Not long ago, actually quite recently, the Russian Pacific Fleet including the Varyag and the revamped Marshal Shaposhnikov, went down as far south as the East China Sea but there for some reason there was no joint exercise with the Chinese East Fleet. It would have been a great opportunity to see the Udaloy refit with the Sovremenny refit together. This fleet also traveled to waters not far from Hawaii and conducted drills there.
