Shilao and Ayi's talk show today went into all the movements by PLAN in recent days regarding the two group of ships near Japan (starting at 65 minutes in). The prediction is that the two groups will join up somewhere to the east of Japan and then shadow the exercises by HMS QE2 + USS America + JS Ise.
It should be noted that all three ships are only equipped with F-35B for fixed wing aircraft. This would allow the PLAN group to gather valuable data on the aircraft with 055/799, to see how well 055 can handle air defense when 5th generation fighters are involved. Until USS Carl Vinson (loaded with F-35C and F/A-18) arrives in the area there's no way for the baby carriers to avoid sending up F-35 unless they want to do without air cover entirely.
Shilao points out that although nowadays we tend to only get excited when Liaoning or Shandong heads out with a strike group 055 should not be seen as just a Chinese Ticonderoga. Instead due to the large UVLS and nasty surprises it can pack it 055 should also be seen as a Chinese Slava, with all the associated anti-ship implications that brings. Shadowing a group with 3 small carriers would be the perfect dress rehearsal for 055 for this role.

I see it in a different way. The ships sent includes an ELINT ship, and both the 055 and the 052D has remarkable ESM abilities. They can use these ships for gathering signals. The fact that the Type 815 ELINT ship is joining them along the way means it was coming back from a previous mission, probably tracking the QE, the Dutch and the Indian ships as they had their exercise with the US on the Philippine Sea.
The second group (052D, 052C, and 054A) that passed Miyako is probably going to shadow, monitor US carrier Carl Vinson that has joined with HMS QE and USS America.
Don't know what the first group is doing; probably to meet up with Russia Navy for an exercise. It doesn't make sense for them to travel north and circle around Japan, just to meet up somewhere in the south on the East side of Japan to monitor an exercise that is happening near Okinawa.

These surface combatants were high tech for the Chinese standards of the 1990s.

But heyy, Chinese Sovremenny that been upgraded are very modern now with all Chinese weapons and electronics. Not bad to have 2x4 YJ-12A supersonic missiles and 32 cells for HQ-16C or Yu-8 anti-submarine missiles and a 24-cell FL-3000N short-range anti-air missiles
Interesting what they do with the original Moskit, Sunburn and SA-N-12 SAM ?
