DDG151 was the flag ship of the Red Navy, i.e. the PLAN; DDG112 was with the Blue Navy, i.e. the adversary, DDG112 is 22 years older than DDG151. DDG151 was sunk so quick and so easily shocked lots of fans, in the old days, the flag ship of the red navy wasn't even allowed to sink in any drill.

New video from CCTV detailing the west pacific exercise last year. Sorry I don't have time to translate much, just a few things:

  • The flag ship of the red force DDG151 was quickly sunk by DDG112, the video claim that 112 took cover from merchant ships to get close, and 151 did not have its radar running at full power. (pretty sure that's not the whole story but that's what CCTV disclosed)
  • Weather conditions were quite rough, helicopters can't be used for most of the exercise.
  • Looks like some hatch doors on the 151 did not have strong enough latching mechanism. 10:35 ouch! He survived with some broken bones and teeth.
  • 112 got some bad vibrations on the way back, turns out one propeller got entangled with fishnet and was turning slower than usual. Also some severe frosting happened to the ships.

The two initially assigned to secure the latch were clearly at a loss and probably felt they needed to keep busy and didn't think through the situation first since they were on camera. The one who got hit was fortunately not killed, he looked up just in time so that he took a full frontal rather than having his skull bashed in or his neck broken. Well, this is what training is for and why it is very much needed especially for a military with no naval tradition on top of no combat experience and lots of conscripts.

An object lessons for the PLAN in the reality of sustained operations in the Blue Water.

This will invariable lead to better damage control, better maintenance, and better ships.

In this case, the injuries, while certainly very painful, are recoverable and thankfully, did not cost anyone their life. It very easily could have.

The port side opening is for deployment of towed decoy according to previous analysis. a photo of SLQ-25 deploying port for comparison.

We don't have a good view of the starboard opening which is for linear towed array sonar deployment unfortunately.
