IIRC he said he was testing add-on device with an iPhone. Its a small IR camera.

I've seen a few news articles refer to this report. Basically says computer processing power has gotten to the point where developing technologies that need it can detect submarines beyond the use of sonar. It's a game changer in ASW and China and Russia are both developing these technologies.

New video from CCTV detailing the west pacific exercise last year. Sorry I don't have time to translate much, just a few things:
- The flag ship of the red force DDG151 was quickly sunk by DDG112, the video claim that 112 took cover from merchant ships to get close, and 151 did not have its radar running at full power. (pretty sure that's not the whole story but that's what CCTV disclosed)
- Weather conditions were quite rough, helicopters can't be used for most of the exercise.
- Looks like some hatch doors on the 151 did not have strong enough latching mechanism. 10:35 ouch! He survived with some broken bones and teeth.
- 112 got some bad vibrations on the way back, turns out one propeller got entangled with fishnet and was turning slower than usual. Also some severe frosting happened to the ships.
