An interesting procurement document from 2021. It announces the winner of a bid for optical simulation and mechanical design files for F-35's EOTS system. The winner is

.

The requirements of the bid is as follows:
–– Complete the reverse design of the F35 EOTS optical system, which has the following functions and features: 1) Ground and air infrared search and range tracking, staring infrared imaging with 4x magnification; 2) Laser ranging function and laser spot tracking and guidance function, operating laser wavelengths are from (?) 1.064um and 1.57um; 3) Single aperture design; 4) 7-sided sapphire optical window, providing 360-degree omnidirectional field of view; 5) A visual axis calibration mechanism to achieve the alignment of laser and infrared imaging boresight; 6) EOTS components are contained in a composite material enclosure, and the system structure is approximately 493 mm × 698 mm × 815 mm; 7) A U-joint provides a 360° field of view.

–– Provide the optical reverse design file and mechanical structure reverse design file of F35 EOTS, and provide a detailed design report.

Is it just me or is the bid seem to be quite low? 480k for a 5th gen EOTS design would barely pay the salary of a few engineers for a year. Maybe something more preliminary?

does anyone know if this image is credible in any capacity? its been making the rounds on twitter

I’ve read on Weibo that the unit in question operates the J-16, not the J-20, but even then it isn’t like the J-20 is invincible so there is a chance of it getting locked on and vice versa. The document in question is actually a commendation on the J-16 operators so there are some interesting tidbits that the guy sharing it on Twitter, a PLAAF hater, has omitted. Supposedly there is an excerpt on J-16 identifying and locking F-35 using passive (IR sensors) that “mysteriously” got redacted by the poster.

The reason that he blotted out the name of the fighter is because he got butthurt after someone on Weibo fooled him into believing that x-ray scans of a toy J-20 swallowed by a toddler where EOTS footage of an F-35 acquiring lock on the J-20. He hoped to fool people into thinking that J-20 got locked. But even if it does, I don’t see what the big deal is. Getting locked in peacetime is a fairly common occurrence.

Translated:
"The JASDF F-35 was revealed to have arrived near Taiwan Island, and it was suspected that the J-20 did not discover the F-35 approaching.
According to related news, during China’s exercise around Taiwan Island in August last year, several F-35 fighter jets from the JASDF approached the exercise area and successfully locked on to the J-20 fighter jets of the PLAAF using the IR channel of the onboard EOTS. According to observations, the J-20s did not exhibit any responses"

For someone who claims to have stellar academic records at BUAA he sure can’t tell the X-ray of a toy model from infrared image of the real thing. I thought that the lack of exhaust should e been a giveaway, or the presence of a friggin rib cage…

You’d be surprised.

Here is a Weibo post debunking his claim. Technically it isn’t even a claim. He is trying to be sneaky by selectively censoring the document, and then hoping readers are gullible enough to connect the dots.
