Think about the geometry of the dish for a 360 coverage.

the VT and HT will obscure the rear view, so the option is always to avoid placing an antenna facing directly rear ward.

for optimal coverage 360/3 = 120 deg would be enough for electronic steering of the beam.

so you really can only place the 3 antennas in an inverted triangle.

an inverted triange is not good for aero or stability or aeroelastics.

if it wasn't the qualified radome ellipsoid shape, wouldn't there have to be an extensive
qual program to prove out the aerodynamics and drags counts? it was probably easier to stay with the same shape and just change out the internal components

does anyone know what kind of switches they use to steer the beam to lock onto targets. wouldn't this switch require a lot of RF power handling capability or else they would burn out

China naval AEW (most likely) spotted !?!

Just "found" at XAC ... not sure if a Y-7-derivate or a completely new type, but anyway most likely something new again.

this has to be one of the most important developments for PLAN. I'm not sure if it's Y-7 derivative either. The vertical tailfins obviously point to something that requires a lot of change from the normal Y-7/Ma-60 series of aircraft. So until we see a more clear picture, I can't say it's a Y-7 derivative.

If you take Y-7, replace the tail with one with four fins, replace the undercarriage to enable it to operate from Varyag, replace the wing with one much stronger to cater for carrier landings and with folding outer panels, replace the engines with stronger ones with new propellers, replace the cockpit, redesign the fuselage to carry the larger forces, and the radar saucer, you would have nothing left of Y-7.

P.S. And if your going to use cats.....

WJ-6C is used in Y-8 platforms are about 5100 shp each. it should be noted that allison T56 used in E-2 has about the same shp.

...This ^^ aircraft looks like a KJ-2000 with the radome missing..It's off topic anyway. This thread is about the PLAN aircraft carrier.. Back on topic gents! Back on topic!

But sorry - since You posted these two pictures - any confirmation, when they were taken ??

As such they must be either older photos since these markings with the red flag were from the time, when the KJ-2000 were newly converted from Il-76MD's. Or if these recent pictures ... then they are a sign that additional IL-76s are under conversion. ?!!

I am trying to compile a set of images of different Awacs units, both kj200 and kj2000. Does anyone have images of kj200 beyond the original four? The alleged planaf units?
