All the other Y-8GX planes don't have them either. Its a possibility that the aerial may be used to communicate with older planes and ships. Perhaps something they may have figured out that they lacked on the KJ-2000s or the other Y-8GXs and decided to add it here as a remedy. Jets like the KJ-2000 or the SAAB AEW fly at speeds that using wire antenna may not be wise, not to mention clearance with the disk.

I think KJ-200 is for PLA Navy. These aerials are for communication or some sort of passive sensor. I checked and notice those aerials on the US Navy Hawkeye AEW&C too. SAAB AEW don't have them because there are purely for the Air Force AEW&C.

One difference between KJ-200 & SAAB is that KJ-200 has 360 degree coverage and SAAB only 270 degree.

Pakistan has decided to buy only 3 SAAB AEW&C and keep two SAAB planes as spares without the AEW. News is that they are buying 2 Y-8 rotodomes from China.

One reason could be that SAAB can't do a complete 360 sweep with its radar and therefore the Y-8 rotodome could act as the command post.

That is normally not an issue, as proper planning will solve that, plus most of the threat axis if there is a conflict is coming primarily in one direction.

if this photo is taken recently, then it shows B4040 to B4043 still exists along with the 3007x KJ-2000. Basically, indicating that huitong's assessment is wrong.

I highly doubt this is true and wont believe it until i hear confirmation from Chinese side...

China, Sweden to provide spy planes to Pakistan: Air chief

LAHORE: China and Sweden will provide state-of-the-art surveillance aircraft to Pakistan, Chief of Air Staff Air Chief Marshal Tanvir Mahmood Ahmed said on Friday. According to Geo News, he said four AWACS aircraft from China and four SAAB-2000 aircraft from Sweden would reach Pakistan soon. Talks were also underway for the purchase of 30 to 40 FC-20 aircraft from China, he added. But he told Dawn News that plans to buy the AWACS, FC-20s and short-range air-to-air missiles had been affected by Pakistan’s dwindling foreign exchange reserves. The Pakistan Air Force had sought foreign loans for the execution of some of the contracts it had signed recently, he added. daily times monitor

5 SAAB ERIEYES all equipped with AEW. The 5th one is for training purpose so I believe it would have some limited capabilities.

As for Y-8 PAF has declared to purchase 4, not 2.

all along, we have been hearing about China exporting AEW&C to Pakistan, but we just don't know which variant they are exporting right now. Will it be the balance beam? We will see when the delivery happens.

well they only have 2 types on the Y-8 airframe, rotodome or beam. if they are ready to export AEW&C to Pakistan then something says they have something better for their own use. with no confirmation of any AWAC within PLAAF inventory it makes you wonder that its ready to export to pakistan while none are know to be in service.

No its not Balance Beam. I think it was ACM or may be I read somewhere else that it would be rotodome. Plus, the AWACs [from China] I saw in Islamabad was based on Y-8 with Rotodome. So I believe PAF is not going for Balance Beam.

any mention about the data link?
according to janes, data link such as JTDS based on link-16 was force multiplier.it was essential communication gear for modern AWACS.
except for few countries like japan,or australia pentagon refuse to provide taiwan with link-16,even the saude 4 E-3A sentry was not fitted with link-16,until in early 2000 when the US finally agree to sold it to the saude AF.
to date,PLAAF still trying to develop there own version of JTDS.this may be explain why PLAAF AWACS either still carry older version such link-11 temporary or not yet enter service.
