Philippines Vs Taiwan... Troubled Waters

Equation

Lieutenant General
Philippines doing this all by itself=0% chance.
this Spanish carrier project can bankrupt them.

but if the United States wants to help them then anything is possible. so it really depends on the US. the US can easily fully refurbish this thing and pack in the latest equipment. the Philippines don't have any personal qualified to run this ship but that can be solved by a full fledged training program by the USN. if backed by a full financial & technical aid program this can happen.

Yeah but WHOSE PAYING for ALL of that refurbishment and training? Not only that, the carrier still needs escorts as PLAWOLF had just mention earlier, so that's another group of crew members and money and resources to be allocated for that kind of CVN basic sea power projections. Finally do we even need to discuss what kind of submarines and crew training to go along with that fantasy Philippine CVN battle group? ALL of that are just the surface and sub-surface battle groups requirements and than there's the air squadron they have to put together. That's a mighty tall order for a country whose GDP are smaller than Taiwan's.

Chances are if they actually bought it, it's highly likely that it's destined to become another museum ship in active service.

Well....it depends on how they deploy the ship. Let's assume they use it strictly as a helo carrier, they refurb the ship to include a larger hospital unit, and painted white with a red cross. It would enable them to do more humanitarian work themselves when natural calamities occur such as the annual typhoon season. I can see a use for them in a non-combat role. But I doubt they will invest that kind of money and effort towards humanitarian needs.

Filipino propaganda that's not reported in any major Filipino news agents... let alone the intended audience of Taiwan and China, and mainly spread on Vietnamese news sites...

Maybe every time something about 'OMG CHINA BUY BACKFIRES' turns up it's the dastardly PRC trying to intimidate its neighbours with propaganda, amirite?

I suggest people try to tone down on this knee-jerk country-bashing, it's not getting anyone anywhere.

You do know, that my so-called "reaction", was just a basic-level dismissal and comment of the Philippino military capabilities. And consider the news/Philippino government currently to be as credible as North Korean threats, I don't think that can even be remotely be considered country-bashing.

I'm surprised by your reaction though.

And for all honesty, Xe(formerly blackwater) and some PMC probably can execute better organizations and operations than the Philippino government.

I don't know I agree with your statement. North Korea at least shot up an South Korean island. I am not aware of any notable military action other than turning tail by Filipino military against an opponent that can shoot back. Compare to North Korea, Philippine is deficient on both will and capability, by objective standard.

Philippine's military budget is actually not that bad -- around 2.9 billion USD. Consider Taiwan only spend around 10 billion USD on defense. Philippine should be able to sustain a capital stock that's around 30% of Taiwan. But Philippine has no air force to speak of, it's navy is non-existent, and its army is a faction of Taiwan's. So where did all the resources go?

Philippine now spend around 1% on defense, which is low by global average. With a growing economy, pushing that to 2% shouldn't be a major drain. And around 5 billion, that's about what Indonesia spend on defense now. So even this carrier (plus the escorts) are potentially affordable. The question is whether Philippine government is effective enough to bring it off. And from the objective observation, probably not.

Come now. I would have thought it is obvious -- development into casino/resort. :D

That's what I said, knee-jerk country-bashing.

You must admit that Philippine is not noted for government or military effectiveness. How is stating of fact knee-jerk country bashing? If you have evidences to the contrary, I am all ears.

As for country bashing, aren't you guilty of it yourselves? I cite a *SPANISH* resource, and you automatically assume it's Chinese propaganda. Again, if you can provide evidences to the contrary, I am all ears.

By the way, if you care to track down the information, now turns out some Arab states in addition to Philippine now express interest in Principe de Asturias.

That's what I said, knee-jerk country-bashing.

So making factual dismissals of the government and commenting on their military capabilities is already considered country-bashing? You sir, need to be careful with what's available out there in this world.

Oh, and may I suggest, "knee-jerking" to be applied to what I have said, to be a ridiculous over-exaggeration?
