Any number of factors come in but it’s hard to attack a cruise missile as they terrain mask. Flying low and fast moving with the ground creates issues for the radar and missiles.
Patriot was designed to spend the taxpayers money onto a paper tiger system.
The S-300 was designed against aggressors, including but not limited low flying cruise missiles .
This radar designed to detect low flying cruse missiles.
Of course there is still the equation about the cost ratio, one patriot / s-300 missile cost as much as a cruise missile.
But in this case the Saudis loosing 100 million $/day for at least two weeks, probably for longer period, so I can assume they tried everything that is possible with the limited capability of the Patriot.

Yes, if only Saudi Arabia had spent enough money on a modern air force with AWACS.
The tens of billions they spent on Typhoons, F-15s and E-3s clearly wasn't enough.
S-300 use the next radars in the original basic package:
Patriot so advanced, it has to use only this radar to cover all function that done by the above radars, and needs only a single frequency !!!

Yes, everyone can see the difference, stupid ruskies using different radars for low altitude / medium/high early warning, target acquisition and missile command / illumination .
The american taxpayers know well a single X band radar can do all function .
I mean, it is obvious why the patriot cost several times more than an s-300 battery with the same number of launchers.

Yeah, 5 E-3 and 300+ fighter jet is too small inventory to cover 2 million square km.
I mean, this inventory doesn't put the kingdom into the "best air-forces top ten".
It has only the 12th biggest airforce on the surface of earth, bigger than the German, British or Israeli air force.
