CAATSA doesn't apply to China. $1.3 billion might seem a lot but it is relatively less compared what it used to be thanks to inflation. $1.3 billion in the '80's is something different now.

That's why they haven't taken delivery of the Su-35, because they'll get slapped with CAATSA which would mean less support for the backbone of their airforce (F-16, E-2C) and army (M1, AH-64).
Not any specific sanction, just the US threatening that aid would have a significant effect. Egypt's defense budget is only around $5 billion.

But that missile was already on offer I think 4 years ago, when Egypt was not even mentioned for the first time in connection to CHinese arms
Well, they got the Rafale way before that and IIRC they were looking at the JF-17 as well some time ago. The Egypt-China connection goes back decades ago with the F-6/7, K-8 and the Mig-23 swap deal. There are other stuff as well like radars.

Like in the case of Pakistan, the real figure is much higher. You don't maintain such a large army and airforce with up to a million soldiers in this day and age with just $5 billion.

Even the Turks divide their defence budget over various ministries and the real figure is hidden by a maze of large companies, foundations, institutions and 1000+ defense projects.

I feel this way too, especially with the modernization the Egyptian army gone through when El -Sisi came to power.
How much do you think is the real defence budget of those two(EG, PAK)?

Agreed, I meant, long before the J-10CE entered theist story

By the way, I tried to compare both to find any difference ... and IMO they look both the same; so my bet is still another one for Pakistan.
